Yes, disorderly order about sums it up. The sad thing about it is that I love love love clean houses.....and it hasn't been easy to reconcile with the fact that while I come close once in a while to a nice clean house, living in a magazine-house day to day just ain't gonna happen.
The biggest battle in all of this is in the thoughts. Sometimes I think I will surely go crazy if I don't get the floor mopped, or the laundry hung up. It is good to an extent, that instinct or drive or longing for order, because it compels us to make our homes nice. So it has a purpose. But sometimes circumstances do not allow us to accomplish all that we feel compelled to do. Then we just have to get alold of those thoughts. I really will not go crazy if I don't get whatever it is done. I hope. ha.
Laundry never really gets done here. The older kids do their own, which is as much a trial as if I did it myself, because of the way they take my stuff out and throw it on the couch, or leave theirs in for me to take care of because they forgot or had to go to bed. And the way I am about laundry, I can't just throw theirs on the couch. I may not have the neatest uncluttered house, but I do like the clothes to look nice. To me, that is important. I hang up everything that is "bye-bye", and fold up the rest of the stuff. We have a huge basket for clean underwear, and a basket for unmatched socks, and one for matched socks. (guess which one is empty?)....
That being said, I am really behind right now - the couch has a good sized pile. Not the biggest it's ever been, but it is getting there. The good thing is that part of it is a huge stack of clean folded towels.
Jon left 5 hess trucks out, but we put away all of the dollhouse stuff. I do believe in letting the kids play in the living room, even though there can easily be a dozen or more people in here in the evening.
I need to call Sears tomorrow to get that stacking kit...the washer and dryer are not in their proper spots yet, just sort of in there. I am trying really hard to keep the laundry room in order, it is so much harder to get things back in order once they get away from me.
But the most important thing in all this is to remain in goodness. That is the part that makes me want to cry, thinking about how agitated I can be when things get messy. So what!!! I truly want to remain calm and kind and good.. No matter how things get around here.
So, I hope that answered the questions....but I think Cheryl did it best. By the way, Cheryl, thank you....I would eat food you cooked, too!

not staying home today either
No, today I have places to go. I have a few things to take care of with Benjamin, an insurance payment to make, and an insurance check to deposit.
The good thing about me being a stay-at-home mom is that I can do the things that Paul cannot do since he as to work all day. It is funny though, because I don't really stay at home, though I do try.
Charlotte Claire had a high fever again last night. Wait a minute, didn't she already have this? Either there are two different things going around, or it is a two-parter. I don't know. I just know I should write down who had what. Suzanne started her fever on Saturday night, and is hovering around 100 degrees this morning. I did get the other kids out the door for school today, whew. Not easily or breezily, but I'll take it.
I wish I could pay Abigail like $40 -50 thousand a year to stay home and help me. I am getting spoiled. You would think the place would look like a million bucks, ha. But we manage.
We still haven't made reservations for our vacation, and to tell the truth, I am not in any particular hurry. It will be sad when we make them then go and come back...because looking and looking forward is half the fun. I have found a few promising places, but we haven't decided yet. We have ruled out Mexico, since Benjamin mentioned the travel advisories. Now, I am sure the resorts on the coast are probably safe and sound, but....we decided not to. We are thinking Dominican Republic or Jamaica. I found a place that has special prices on a new section of the hotel where every room is a suite with a jacuzzi and special no-reservations for the all-inclusive restaurants. They even have a pillow menu. But I don't know if this means you choose your pillow, or there is a menu on the pillow. I can't wait to find out. But if anyone knows, feel free to clue me in. I am aware that it is form of escapeism just to be looking at all these places, but that's okay. Paul and I have had more fun and fellowship looking together....
Emily gets home in 32 days. I am sure it will not be as exciting for her as it is for us, as she has to say goodbye to all her friends there in Norway. And come back and join real life again. Job, insurance, health care....ugh. But the little ones are excited to see her again, and do not tell her this, but when I looked at some pictures of her recent little trip to England, I saw her and cried. It seems just cruel and horrible to not see my own daughter for a whole year!!! I know it isn't, but that is just how it is for me. Painful.
I wrote this this morning and then the internet went down. So here I am again. Back home. Camille is sleeping, Charlotte Claire is playing dollhouse on the little brown carpet, Kathryn is having tea and pizza for afterschool snack while watching Curious George. Abigail, Suzanne, Mali, Aaron, Joseph, and Margaret are all around and about too. Samuel must have stayed after today.
Christmas is in 42 days. I only know that because Emily is coming home in 32 days, and because I counted. I am not counting the days out of pure excitement, but just to be in touch with how little time I have to get things for these guys. My present closet is looking pretty bare, and with more of the kids older now, the clearance toys just don't cut it anymore. I don't want to go overboard and spoil them or anything, but even $20 times 16 is alot! And I must admit: I bought a package of Spree candy canes today. They were 99 cents and they looked good. I put them on the top of the refridgerator, but not before dancing around the kitchen singing, "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, in every store you go..."
Well, Charlotte Claire is sitting with me now, and she wants attention. And I have to plan dinner...I am thinking to make some soup from the leftover chicken from last night.
Since the kids are home now and I am talking to them, I cannot concentrate. Sometimes I think of these interesting things to write about, then when I get a turn on my computer (AARON!), and the internet is actually working, I forget what seemed so interesting.

stay home, ha!
I just can't seem to stay home. Today, I found a little surprise in Suzanne's hair. The good thing is that I found only ONE. Not even one nit. I looked and looked. But I treated her anyway. And I decided to wash everyone's bedding. The washer had already "F-20'd" the load with Jon's bedding, so I did what any mom who really wanted to stay home and bake does: I went to the laundry mat. I made Benjamin come with me. He was extremely helpful, carrying out all the baskets into the laundrymat, and he even went over to the gas station and got me a large coffee. It was nice to spend some time with him. Now their bedding is all clean, most of their coats, and all the towels. I called the dr. and got some prescription shampoo, which Paul picked up. Tonight I am going to wash all the girls hair with the special shampoo, just in case. This has been an extremely mild case so far, and I really want to keep it from spreading. Abigail vacuumed the furniture today, and we washed the couch cover.
I feel dizzy from checking and re-checking hair. I do not like this, not one little bit.
Dinner is in the oven, roasted red potatoes and chicken breasts marinated in Southwest sauce. I just have to make a veggie, Sam already set the table.
So I didn't get to bake today, or take a nap, or fill the hot tub. But here I am, alive and well.
And it is getting time to get that dinner on the table.

good morning!
Isn't it? I almost forgot a few times. I started thinking it was a bad morning. But when I was showering the unwilling-to-get-moving Evelyn Joy this morning, I was encouraging her. I told her that if she had bad and grumbly thoughts all day, that would become her. I told her that old people, some of them, are miserably and cranky because they have become their bad and complaining thoughts. I told her she gets to choose today, and while I was telling her this, I really woke up and decided wholeheartedly that TODAY I will be good.
Even though Sam didn't get up for first trip, and if you know Sam, he is not a joy in the morning. I have to keep a distance to avoid getting trapped into numerous arguments about irrelevant things. He got up with five minutes to spare, I gave him a strawberry bagel, wrapped in a paper towel to go, and decided NOT to ask him if his shirt is clean or if he brushed his teeth.
Even though Evelyn and Sonja both had showers this morning and their hair was tangly, and we were in a hurry, and we couldn't find Sonja's backpack.
Even though no one (meaning me) has matched socks in a while, and though their are tons of clean ones, they are mingling around single.
Yes, so today I am going to be good. I am not going to give into that ever-present grumbling, even though there are still dishes on the counter from last night's dinner. We did run the dishwasher twice yesterday, but there were still things that didn't fit.
And I am certain that when some of my kids realize that I wrote about the itchy head syndrome, they are going to hang me out to dry. I know it isn't very nice to say they are going to kill me. I checked heads last evening, extremely carefully, and didn't find anything on anyone except for Jonathan, and Charlotte Claire. I was glad not to find any on Camille...she is so little and that shampoo is rough stuff. It will keep us on our toes for a while.
I never had it when I was growing up either, and always associated it with dirtiness. Yuck. Then a few of my nephews tried on Halloween masks in a store when they were little, and we think that's where they got them. Then several years ago one of my older ones was in kindergarten, and she had an itchy head....oh my goodness! I was almost in shock. I have since read that they prefer clean hair, they are harder to get rid of these days because they get resistant to the remedies, and they are not uncommon in setting with young children. I admit when I confirmed my suspicions with Jonathan last night, I was exasperated. I said I want to homeschool. This is ridiculous. Some kid in his class probably has them, and is sharing them with everyone. Lovely.
Romans 8, v 35 "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written:
"For Your sake we are killed all day long:
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter"
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities not powers, nor things present not things to come
39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Just think of that. The choice is mine. More than conquerers! It is up to me. The situations and circumstances of life are not random, no, God has an interest in us!
Following this way that Jesus made is not restricting or stuffy, but rather liberating and exciting!
If faith is living and active, there is life and blessing. It is good.
So, armed with this mind to fight against bad thoughts and grumbling, today I am going to stay home, I hope. Then dentist just called. I forgot I had to write a note for Sonja to get picked up for the dentist. Paul is having his turn bringing a few kids. We used to split them up, but there got to be too many for two groups. Now, he just takes a few with him for his cleanings, and I take all the rest. We go in for cleanings every six months, or we are supposed to anyway. It gets sort of confusing sometimes, when someone has to cancel. We usually have someone to substitute. I am so glad I don't have to go today!!!
I am thinking about doing some baking today. And some laundry. And playing the water game and trying to fill the hot tub. Oh, when it is clean and fresh and the nights are dark and chilly...the steam...I could really use a soak right about now. Ha, and the day has just begun!

shopping again....
While shopping for shoes for Kathryn, I found these pajamas for Charlotte Claire. $3.00. I couldn't resist. They say, "so cute it's scary"....anyway, this is her new haircut.
Here is some candy....
I count 8 kids. Sam is the big guy sprawled out in the front. He likes trading. Poor Camille's candy has so many pieces opened up with tastes taken.
Today it became apparent that Kathryn was fine. I talked to her about skipping school, and telling the truth, and lying and all of that fun stuff. Then it came out that she hates her shoes. I had mercy on her, I do remember being eleven. She has this pair of black printed canvas sneaker-like flats that she wears every day, and they are getting worn out. So I told her she has to start going to school every day, but today I would take her shopping. We went with Sonja because Abigail was staying home to change the water in the hot tub. It is emptied and cleaned and has to wait it's turn to get filled, another contender for the water. (The plumber will be here later in the week)
I have been trying to be much more careful with our shopping dollars. Today I found these two little outfits for $4.98 each, but the little girls don't really need them, so...I didn't buy them. It was hard. They were SO cute. I just need to say NO more. I did get myself a few 75%off summery dresses for our trip. $7.48 seems like alot, I can't imagine paying $29.99.
Dinner tonight was sloppy joe, but it was half ground beef and half ground turkey. We had it on fresh Italian bread, still warm from the oven when I bought it for $1 a loaf. And mixed veggies with summer squash, yum. No one had to go anywhere tonight, so we had a relaxing table.
Oh, but things happen in life. I was cooking dinner, and Jonathan was standing there itching his head. Great. I know what kindergarten and and an itchy head mean. Remember, they like clean hair....oh, the kids would KILL me if they knew I was writing this on here. Panic ensued when the older kids, mostly the girls, found out what Jon had in his hair. I only found a few, and we had some treatment stuff in the cupboard (I am WAY too superstitious to ever throw that away). Paul gave him a buzz cut (oh, the poor boy. He has ears!! but he is so cute...and hopefully he doesn't get on the bus the day after tomorrow and tell everyone why he got a hair cut, or they will never stop teasing him...we are letting him stay home tomorrow so maybe he will forget. ha.).....I found a few in Charlotte Claire's long blonde hair, so she got a trim, a treatment, and that was that. I checked everyone else, and they are fine. We washed Jon's bedding, put his pillow in a bag for a few weeks, and vaccummed the living room. I will continue to watch the kids for any, and hopefully this will be it. Oh, life is full of fun.
(Cheryl, check Grace. She rode in your van, and Jon didn't. Evelyn and Sonja did, but they are fine, I think and hope.)
Emily is coming home in 43 days! She probably hasn't counted, but we did! That means 53 days 'til Christmas. I do not have much in the present closet this year. The stores are getting smarter, and I didn't run into many clearance sales this year. One of the kids cheerfully suggested that we just give them each $100. Great idea, if there were two of you. Maybe we will have an old fashioned Christmas with just a few gifts and something sentimental. I think just having Emily here will be good enough. I am looking forward to getting a new family picture, too.
Mirielle will be home for Thanksgiving. I am excited about that, too. She likes to bake and we usually make 15 or so pies. She is probably reading this and thinking that with what we found in Jon's hair, she will just stay in Conneticut, thank you!
I am tired. It is only 10:20, but really it is 11:20. So my body knows it is bed time, but my brain is saying to stay up and enjoy the living room with only Mali, Joseph, Aaron, Abigail, and Paul in here. And Rosie. She is lying on the floor sleeping.
monday morning school skippers...
Well....the older 4 school kids went fine. Since I haven't changed my watch yet, I thought it was 8:10,and I came running out here this morning only to realize that it was really 7:10. So I had plenty of time to make blueberry bagels for them. And Kathryn realized that she had a headache. She skipped. Then the second trip kids were tricky because Evelyn has been sick this weekend, and Suzanne is definetly still sick. Yesterday Sonja was complaining about various ailments, so that ruled out sending Jon, since he can't go alone. Well, he COULD, but I do not think he would go get on the bus by himself.
So no nice quiet morning for me. Jonathan has cried about three different things already, he put a fake Hannah Montana hairpiece in Kathryn's hair then pulled it out and she hit him....and he did the "pfftttt" thing to Evelyn, and she screamed at him, and then he thought he would be funny and do some tooting, and his sisters did not appreciate the humor, they all started screaming at him, so he cried. Now Camille and Charlotte Claire are up, so my typing minutes are numbered.
I went to a baby shower yesterday. The lovely first time mother to be is due the same time I was supposed to be due. I know, I know, get over it already. I am happy for her, she is so cute and young and sweet and excited. She is choosing to be surprised, so she got gender-neutral gifts. I got her two little froggy suits and a penguin suit. So soft and so sweet. We had an excellent time, we had a turn if we wished to encourage her to something, so I told her to remember that lack of sleep FEELS like it will kill you, but it won't. It is all in the attitude. I know for me it has been one of the hardest things through the years, to be tired. Of course it is wise to get some sleep if it is possible, but I know what is like to become so focused on trying to get that sleep and when it doesn't work it is so frustrating and when you are so tired you just want to stomp your feet and cry and fall apart. (Sleep when your baby sleeps is fine advice, but then when are you going to shower and clean the toilet and make dinner? ) (but I didn't mention this part to her)
The plumber is supposed to come today. Do I have to clean the house for the plumber? hmm. Our water has to get fixed, and my niece's husband has been very very sick. So Paul is calling someone today to come look at it. When you turn on the faucet and water just comes out, be thankful. When you step into the shower, and water just comes out, be thankful. When you put in a load of wash, and it just washes and gets done without turning off in the middle of the load, be thankful.....and when the water doesn't come out of the faucet, also be thankful. But get it fixed as soon as you can, or your life will revolve around little things like telling no one to flush during Camille's bath, or while the whites are washing, and literally checking with every one of the 16 other people in the house and telling them to not so much as brush their teeth while you go in for a quick shower. Or else! Because standing there under a little cold drip....in your mind, toilet flushing while someone is showering will not be viewed as a mere oversight, no it will be on par with a federal offense. How could they!!!?
So now I will go put the whites in the dryer. I actually washed three loads sucessfully yesterday. I didn't do much laundry on Friday or Saturday, and when I went into the laundry room yesterday, I warned the kids that if or when I drop dead suddenly, they better be more careful than they have been....there were dirty clothes in the clean sock basket, darks mixed with lights in the hampers, a basket of clean clothes sitting there ready to hang, various items on the floor......they tell me I had better not go and die on them. Well, I am not planning on it, but you never know.
I had better get moving. I need to wash my long tangly hair before the plumber gets here. Plus it makes me nervous, accidents usually only happen when my hair is dirty.

happy november first!
I am a bit happier than I was yesterday, because I feel a bit better than I did yesterday! I headed out to urgent care with Samuel, my 14 year old son who was kind enough to volunteer to come along with me - only to be turned away due to patient volume. So I decided to go to the E.R., which I did not want to do, but, my face hurt, my head hurt, and my eye was swollen. I looked lovely. Samuel was such a good sport waiting with me for 3 and 1/2 hours that I took him to McDonalds on the way home and let him get THREE things from the dollar menu! That was after I stopped and filled my prescriptions for arithromycin and eye drops. I deleted the little detail about using the expired eye ointment when I talked to the E.R. dr. She thought I was stupid enough when she asked me how many children I had and then asked me about birth control....um,,,none of your business. I did not say that of course. I don't see why it was pertinent, could be she was just making conversation. Anyway, she gave me the scripts, and I was on my way...finally.
We did go trick or treating, but without Suzanne, who all of the sudden had a temperature of 101. She stayed home with daddy and Joseph and Benjamin and Mali and Aaron. Sam went with his friends, and my sister Cheryl and her daughter Becky and her sweet grandchild Grace went along with Abigail and I, and Margaret, Kathryn, Evelyn, Sonja, Jonathan, Charlotte Claire and Camille....here are some pictures. Grace, Sonja, and Evelyn in Cheryl's van.
Sam and his friends ended up in the same McdDonalds as us! It was so nice to see them, and give them a few bucks...they literally had coins!
