tsunami...earthquake

It probably seems like the world is ending to the Japanese people right now. With all the unrest in the middle east and recessions....one could wonder. But Jesus said when these things happen, to life our heads for our redemption is near. I am sober today, sad for the sufferings of all these people, and vowing to make my calling and election sure. Time is short, life is short. "Today when you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.."(heb. 3:15)

Mali has a dr. appointment...I need to wash my not-so-long tangly hair, get the little girls dressed in their Bye-Bye clothes, and go pick Miss Mali up from school. I didn't mean to spend any sort of time on this computer this morning....yet I did. When I clicked on the morning news and saw the reports from Japan...oh my.

pictures

Today Ashley got a package in the mail, packed in these foam packing peanuts. The little girls were very interested. We had just finished sweeping and mopping the living room, so I did what any crazy mother would do, I let them dump them out and play with them. Rosie wasn't too sure about this indoor snow.

Now, these two little girls don't look like they could possibly be any trouble at all.

Kathryn Grace in the kids' newly painted room...

Sonja K.'s bed....

Kathryn and Sonja were doing gymnastics while Suzanne played in her "office". The loft bunk is great, they can use the area underneath to store toys and to play under....
They are not falling asleep tonight. The older kids all went to bed, the three elementary kids in that one room just won't be quiet and settle in, and it is after ten o'clock. The power has blinked a few times, so Jonathan is in mild panic mode. He has two battery candles....and I just realized that Paul is not here, so I should probably have a general idea where a flashlight is in case the power goes completely out and the kids all start crying...

stay home day, please?

Sonja K. had a dentist appointment yesterday. She needed to be picked up early. Suzanne and Jonathan wanted to be picked up early, too. So...I picked them up too. We don't like to let Jonny go on the bus "alone", Suzanne, Sonja, and I....he gets rambunctious. So...off we went. They are SO funny. The girls agreed that Kathryn gets the most attention at home, and Sonja said that she herself gets too much too (which is funny because I always think she needs more). We went to Walmart afterward to get important things like baking soda and sugar and drain cleaner (I thought it would be good to unclog the toilet...)...well, $187 later, we had our baking soda and sugar and drain cleaner. AND, jeans for Suze and Sonja, a necklace to replace the ring that got broken for Suzanne, some $1 clearanced jewelry for Mali's birthday, to appease my conscience about the birthday bag I put together for her at the last minute (Mirielle's recycled bag with an envelope with a 20 dollar bill in it, some flower bulbs, one of the last Norwegian chocolate bars, a package of ice cream flavored lip glosses from my present closet....).....you get the picture. We walked around the store and found things we didn't know we needed....we did need the new outlet covers for their room, but they were only 37 cents each. We didn't need the new lime green lamp for their room, but it looks cute. We did need the bananas and the bagels. We didn't need the fabric softener I bought for Mirielle for babysitting, but it was cheap and it had a coupon on it. And, Jonathan finally bought the fully-automatic Nerf gun with his Christmas money. Oh my goodness. I was hesitant to pay so much for a toy, even if it was his money. But he said, "Mom, don't you want me to stop bugging you? If we just get it today, I won't need anything else until I am like Sam's age." Once I caved and it was in the cart, he wanted to get OUT of the store and go home.

I also bought Charlotte Claire a new pair of footy jammies, pink with brown monkeys....$3. They wear them around the house when they don't have princess dresses on. It makes sense, keeps their feet warm and they look so cozy and cute.

Today is Garbage Day, so I have to be sure to keep Miss Rosie inside. I took her for a walk this morning and discovered that her leash is broken. The little clip where it attaches to her collar is broke. There is another leash in the minivan, which Joseph happily drove to college today instead of Old Goldie, who needs her power steering fixed. Still. Rosie is doing better on the leash. I once saw a show on cable, when we were away in a hotel, called, "The Dog Whisperer". He demonstrated how to get a dog to walk on a leash without pulling. He made it look much easier than it is with Rosie, but I am working on it. Every time she pulls the leash tight, I just stop. I don't pull or tug her, I just stop. As soon as there is slack in the leash, I walk again. She is starting to get it, sloooowly. As soon as the weather clears up, I shall walk farther with her....

Sad thing: that fire in Pennsylvania. Seven of the eight children died, ages 11 down to seven months, six girls and a seven year old boy. Only the three year old little girl survived. Those poor poor parents. There is so much information available on the internet, and it can be overwhelming to share in all the grief and sadness. How can God bear it all? We just get a glimpse and blah. He sends rain on the just and the unjust.

I am thankful to live in these days, however. The communication online, via blogs, facebook, email is like everything else in this world: it can be used for good, or for evil. The good is very very good: I have made friends, I can keep in touch with friends, and be encouraged to fight in this daily battle against sin. It is extremely important to be built up in faith. We battle not against flesh and blood, but against powers and principalties...spirits. So we need to be awake and alert so that we are not weighed down by the cares of this life, or by unbelief. I personally do not get to nearly as many meetings or church services as I would like, so being able to click on Brunstad.org or reading other blogs or messages on facebook that help encourage me to take things right, is very helpful.

Because our perspective on things is just by nature WRONG. We think it is awful when we spill something or when someone is mean to us. But itsn't it written that God causes ALL things to work together for the good for those who love Him?

I just see that I have to be in a good spirit to be a help here at home. It can be all clean and shiny (or could it? I am thinking it possibly could, but....let's just say for argument's sake that it COULD.)But what really matters is that I am in the right place, spiritually. When I am full of faith that COME WHAT MAY, God's word is true, and every single thing that happens is for my best, so that I can be saved during my day, then that overflows to the kids. When I say NO to my anger and stop those little rants dead in their tracks, then it is good. I can get myself all rallied up to get this place more in order, more organized, neater, and prettier, and there is nothing wrong with all that. But.....it is all in vain, all just emptiness if I plow forward without listening to what He has to say to me during it all. He gives grace to the humble.

My children all went to school, some very reluctantly. Evelyn and I had such a nice time yesterday that she wanted to stay home again. And Jonathan has Nerf-Gun-On-The-Brain...he did not want to part with that toy today. He got ready in a flash this morning so he could shoot sixty or seventy Nerf bullets at the red chair.....he got it all packed up and put away and cannot wait for after school....the little princesses are busy today. They have out two cash registers to play store, now they have a huge family of dolls out. Being daughter number ten and daughter number eleven, they have inherited like a hundred dolls. Because their mommy always thought that each little girl should get a dolly for Christmas even though their sisters already had some....multiply that by all those Christmases and all those little girls....anyway, they have lots of dolls. Someday when we get rid of all our toys, our house will be like a thousand pounds lighter. Wait, I might have grandchildren....

happy anniversary to me...and Paul

Charlotte Claire and Camille

The room is getting there...here is Miss Sonja's shelf.

Rosie is okay in her cage in the morning until she hears or sees ME. Yes, she loves me.
Suzanne did NOT want to get ready for school....she wanted to stay on the couch, all snuggly in her nighty. But when she found out she was getting picked up early...she found the stamina to get off the couch....

Today is our 27th anniversary. Yes, 27 years ago...on a Friday night at six o'clock, we got married. In his parent's living room, with cake and coffee and some close friends and family. We did have a small reception a few weeks later, and also a church feast. We went away for the weekend, to the small city and to a larger city an hour from here...then we were back to church on Sunday, and back to work on Monday morning. Our honeymoon was last year in Jamaica, after 26 years...I must say I love him more now than I did then, and believe me, I was head over heels. We just need more time together!

I keep thinking it is spring...I know the days are supposed to be warming up to around forty degrees, so this morning I went out the door to walk Rosie in a sweatshirt and my boots...and of course a skirt, and bare legs...brr! It was twenty-something out there, and windy....Needless to say, she didn't get a very long walk.

This morning, Evelyn thought it would be interesting to put Suzanne's new ring on, then one she got on Sunday from the indoor flea-market for three dollars. Well...it got stuck. Really stuck. Her finger started swelling, and of course I was calm cool and collected, ha. Jonathan knows were all the tools are, so he got three different pair of pliers out....I tried to hack the ring off, which was metal-looking plastic, thankfully, but Mirielle was the one who got it off. The ring is history, but Suze did save the pretty plastic jewel....the nice thing was that Suzanne was more thankful that the ring was off of Evelyn than she was sad about losing it....then Evelyn gave Suze her own ring.

I am picking kids up early for Sonja's dentist appointment. It will be more fun to bring four of them. We are going to get them some miniblinds, too.

Jonathan went to school with a skip in his step this morning. He brought his two new Hess trucks for Show-and-Tell, and he will probably be telling anyone who will listen that it is because he knows where all the tools are that Evelyn's ring came off.

One of these days I am going to let all the kids skip school so we can go to the Children's Museum in a nearby city. It is very crowded on weekends.

Rosie is bad. She just went over to the table and inclined her big furry head over to the place where someone's plate with toast is sitting....she probably would have snitched it if I hadn't yelled NO. She just does not learn. I tell her NO about the garbage can all the time, sometimes I bang my hand on the can and tell her NO, and she slinks away...but if there is something yummy in there, that is where her head will be....she likes to take butter wrappers out and chew them up, and of course napkins, yum. She KNOWS she is not supposed to, but she simply doesn't stop it. It is like having a perpetual two year old.

Last night for dinner we had taco salad. Mali likes it without the meat, just black beans. We had black olives and green and red peppers and sweet onions and tomatoes and cheese. Then ice cream and squirty whipped cream for dessert. Tonight I am thinking to make some chicken soup, or rather chicken stew....we like it with potatoes instead of noodles, and slightly thickened like stew. Maybe I will try Tereza's recipe for Mali......

Emily had to leave the birthday party....Cheryl's daughter Claire had an allergic reaction to something, and wanted Emily-The-Nurse to come over to see her. Well....Em went with her to the Emergency Room...(we thought that was funny...Em worked so many nights in a row, and had one off..and ended up in a different hospital...).Claire is okay, I guess. She is allergic to the cold, severly allergic. She swells up. Her throat has swollen from eating ice a few years back...it is dangerous. Not a good climate to live in for her! I don't know what triggered her reaction last night, but I am glad she is okay.

Charlotte Claire and Camille are not your average, normal princesses. No, they have older siblings, and they have watched, "The Simpsons". Char just had Camille's Polly Pocket girl, which Camille wanted back. "She's dead!", Charlotte Claire told her....Camille got really upset, so I told her Polly Pocket really isn't dead. Now they are playing nicely. The other day, one of Camille's princess dolls was "dead, but she has to stay dead because no one will kiss her!" blah.

mopping princesses

They helped Ashley pick up all their toys...because they wanted to mop. They mopped the living room off and on for a good hour.

They really did well, Princess Charlotte Claire and Princess Camille.....

happy birthday mali....

It is 14 degrees out...but the sun is shining, and it is supposed to be 30 degrees by noon AND sunny....so we'll take it.

Why is it that I feel compelled to take care of so many things around here all at once? Blah. And Paul is in Boston. He is coming home for the weekend, working at the Dome, then going back to Boston. So if I want to paint or do things around here, I just have to go for it.

My two little sweetie pies are up. They are such princesses. Charlotte Claire has her little pink dancing dress on, and Camille her pink footy jamas with froggies on them. They have dollhouse stuff set up all across the livingroom. They have Barbies with pretty dresses all over the couch. They just play and play and play....

Samuel didn't go to school today. He had a headache. He took an ibuprofen and went back to bed. Everyone else went.

Tereza, I shall put up some pictures of the bedroom when it is finished. The carpet in that room needs to be replaced. Horribly. It just isn't on the list. 20 years of being the Little Kids' Room. Different cast of characters, year in year out, marker stains and whatever else...they have never been allowed to eat in there, I can't imagine what it would look like if they did. Our windows are awful too. We need new ones throughout the whole house. Our house is only 20 years old, but the windows are rotting right through. We stripped the kitchen ones a few years back and restained them, put on new polyurethane, they still rot. So they look awful. You can scrub them, and the mold comes back. We are planning to replace them, but it is so very expensive. We will get vinyl ones this time.....

So for me, it is one thing to be inspired to work on the things that I can manage to improve, but I have to be careful not to get all out of rest about the things that I cannot change at this time. Paul is so busy with work and church stuff and whatever else he does, so I have to bide my time. Sometimes I feel like the house is falling down around us, but it isn't really. It is just that when I let myself get bothered by things, then it seems like they HAVE to be done NOW. I want the house to look like a magazine house, and it ain't gonna happen. It doesn't help that my sister has this new family room that is simply gorgeous...spacious and airy and cozy....no, I am not jealous! And my brother has a mudroom with room for hundreds of pairs of shoes and boots and coats galore! And a spare refridgerator, too! No, I am not jealous. I shall not let myself be. Instead I will remember the show that was on the other night about the pickpocket in India...so desperately poor. The house that family was crammed into, all crumbling and dingy.....

One of the little ones wet the bed last night....and the laundry mountain lives on.

Today we are making something vegetarian for dinner in honor of Mali's birthday. Maybe lasagna, or veggie stir-fry.

Cold...I am tired of being cold. brr. My fingers are cold. I know when I get busy I will warm up....seriously, I would love to go back to bed. I simply do not sleep well when Paul is not here. I wake up and wake up and wake up, then when it is morning, I can barely lift my head off the pillow...I would surely be able to sleep when it is time to get up.

And...this whole post has a Poor Me tone, so I better get my attitude adjusted....before I taint the whole family.....

whew....and pictures.

Suzanne....painting her room....
Kathryn Grace
This is the color of the bathroom....
I just realized that I forgot to adjust the picture size on the camera, so it took forever to put these pictures up, discouraging me from putting any more.
I finished painting the bathroom today, Suzanne and Kathryn finished the bedroom. Then Kathryn and I got all cleaned up, and picked Mali up from school. Throat culture for her, x-ray for Kathryn. No broken bones, just bruised and sprained. One week off from gym. As I explained to the dr., it is most difficult to know when to take the kids to the dr. for these injuries. Once I waited too long for the broken ligiment in Ben's finger, when he ran into the wall while playing basketball, and got a dressing down from the orthopaedic surgeon. But what he didn't comprehend is that just the week before that, one of the girls jumped from the top of a very tall dresser, and then would not put weight on her foot....not until she got to the dr. office, that is....blah. And $$$.
We took a trip to Kohl's because tomorrow is Mali's 17th birthday, but didn't find anything for her. We then went in to Aldi for a few fruits and veggies, then to Wegman's for posterboard for Margaret's project, and C batteries for Jon's new Hess trucks. And ice cream for tomorrow.
Home again...the boys moved the bunkbeds from the middle of the room, and the kids started getting things in order in there....I had to be the Mean Mom and tell them to wait until tomorrow....it was getting late again, and Suze was so tired....I promised them if they get things nice tomorrow I would get them new miniblinds and put up a new curtain rod for a new valance. It is fun when they are excited about their room. I am in the Home Improvement mood, which can be dangerous ($)....and frustrating. I am ready to move all this living room furniture away from the walls, cover it with sheets and start spackling any dents and bangs....but: tomorrow is Mali's birthday, and we are having a birthday party....
Mali......she is my seventh child, and her real name is Molly Rose. She requested long ago that I don't use the real spelling of her name on here, or that I don't write about her at all...so I chose to spell her name Mali, which is what she wishes her name actually was. (All the other names are real except for Mirielle, which is really Mariel, but she requested the same thing) Anyway....A long time ago, I had Emily - 9 years old, Abigail - 7 years old, Benjamin - 5 years old, Mirielle 4 years old, Joseph 2 (almost 3) years old, and Aaron, 15 months old. Then came Mali. Our house was really really clean back then...Paul's mom paid for a cleaning lady for us that year, from January through April. She came on Fridays and cleaned for 3+ hours....so of course I thought I had to have everything picked up and tidy before she came....she washed all the floors and vacuumed and cleaned the whole house. I paid her extra. I loved it. Anyway....Mali was a sweet and easy baby. Her first summer, Paul and I took her to Norway, and she adjusted to the time change immediately. I always remind her that the first word she ever heard was "God" because the dr. said when she was born so quickly and easily, "God wants you to have babies, Della"....
So....most of the kids are in bed....Mali and Aaron are doing homework together. I am tired. Tomorrow is another day....or as Dr. Seuss said, "Today is done. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one."
