Sometimes I really wonder what I'm thinking. Here's the thing...it's no secret that I touch up my roots, or is it? Surprise, I do! Well. When I first started, I used light brown, then started using dark blonde. When I switched over, I had a box left in my bathroom, and it survived several cleanings and purges, because I might need it some day.
Well. I have been supremely lazy regarding the roots, started to not care at all...then I worried: was I becoming the stereotypical old person, wearing sweatpants to the store (yes, last three times I've gone, but it WAS after PT)? Since it's so hard to get out of the house and into the car, I have become more or less resigned to these four walls. So if my hair is dowdy, meh!
Nope. I had enough, I needed to spruce up the hair. So, being thrifty and not waste-y, I got out that box of L'Oreal Excellence from under the sink, opened the box and saw a one dollar off coupon on the flap dated 12/31/13...wow, this is old! But, I had already changed into an old tank top, and brushed out my long tangly hair, so...I got the gloves on and mixed it up. I squeezed a bit onto my hair near my part, and heard a cracking sound...I looked at the bottle, it looked fine...again...then a huge crack, followed by...the whole bottle had crumbled! We have a drinking cup on the counter for after brushing the teeth and swallowing the vitamins and minerals, so I dumped the dye into it...and put the crumbling bottle pieces into the box. I used the little comb thing that screws on to the top of the bottle, I dipped it into the cup, and proceeded to paint the top of my head near my part. I was getting uneasy though...what if my hair all falls out? So I didn't wait the entire time, but got my rear end into the shower to rinse it out...
As you can see, it didn't cover all the gray...But it doesn't look awful, either. It's not dry yet, but I think it'll be okay. And, I saved twelve dollars.
(If I were rich, you bet I would be going to the salon every few months! I went twice for hair cuts, (in my entire life!) and once for root touch up, a cut, and highlights, and it was so much fun! But, I could buy like 15 boxes of L'Oreal for that!)
So this fine dreary dark winter day, the girls went out and about with Emily, to the Asian food store (Camille bought a box of tea labeled Chinese Restaurant Tea). (A customer in there was asking if they stocked rabbit...they did...I guess it takes all sorts of people to make the world go around...) They went to the Indian store and bought curry and garam masala, then Trader Joe's and got me a bag of popcorn, and some cinnamon dragons. Paul had to go to the dump, then to one of the apartments we have that's empty, and needs sprucing up for the next tenants.
I made brownies. I am not getting a penny to say Aldi brownie mix is SO good. I used strong coffee in place of the water, and in one pan I put a mixture of dark, milk, and white chocolate chips, and one pan I left plain. I line the pans with parchment, so we can lift the brownies right out, then cut them properly.
Sonja is coming over, and Camille is making chicken curry for dinner. She's making me a coffee right now, and I'll sign off so I can talk to them, you all have a good day.

Ha! It's good to be able to laugh at yourself and you know what? It turned out fine!
I've heard Aldi's brownies are so good. I love your idea of using coffee in them.
Della, you got luckier than me!! I bought a box of my usual color (this was 15 years ago) at Walmart and did my hair, as usual. It turned PURPLE! I kid you not! Panic set in. I called our barber. She doesn't do color but called another barber who does. He told her to tell me to wash it at least five times with Dawn detergent and then come see him the next day. I had to go to work the next day. Dawn helped enough that no one really noticed. He said the color was probably expired and they just left the old box on the shelf. I used a medium ash blond back then. Seems the "ash" does have lavender undertones in it. Who knew! Anyway, I haven't done it myself since, and am now white/gray natural, no big deal. Whew!
I didn't even realise hair dye had an expiry date. The bottle cracking and crumbling would have scared me. It looks like it worked out OK in the end. I dye my hair at home and wouldn't dream of paying salon prices. Eek!
Those brownies do sound good! Yum!
I hope you show a photo of what your hair looks like dry, Della. And I just had my hair colored, same shade everything...and it turned redder than brown...sigh...just chalking it up to whatever crazy hormones or lack of. sigh. Wishing you a lovely day.
So funny re: rabbit. I grew up in New England in a family where one side were hunters and fishermen. They didn’t hunt rabbits (mostly birds- we ate duck, goose, pheasant, etc.) but the women on that side of the family, who were Italian, all knew lots of recipes for rabbit and loved to cook it when they could find it! But we weren’t deer hunters so I didn’t eat venison until I was an adult
You are so funny Dellaπ I would have been too scared to use it incase my hair fell out!! π Oh my! I have my hair ‘refreshed’ at my hairdressers. Sounds better than coloured/dyed etc. My hair is white on the sides but the top on the crown is dead mouse grey π¬ π and we don’t want that!
I love curry! Yum π It just so flavourful but I don’t like it to burn my mouth.
Have a lovely day! π

Oh no! I dyed my hair a lavender shade during Covid, when Char and Cam did theirs pink. It was only a slight hue, and I actually really liked it, it was like opalescence or something...
The cracking and crumbling bottle did scare me, ha, but I have been so lazy about getting it done, and I finally convinced myself, and changed into that old painting tank top, brushed the tangles out of my hair, and by golly I was going to go through with it....:)
I think you can use a purple shampoo to tone down the red...:)
I grew up in the suburbs, in the 70's, we didn't eat much meat except for on payday and a few days after, then it was in casseroles or some burger in the spaghetti sauce, or if we were really lucky, grilled Spam and cheese. No one hunted. But Paul grew up in a more rural area, deer hunting is more of a thing. He did shoot some rabbits years and years ago, but would I cook them? nope. Bunnies are too cute.
Refreshed, yes, that's the word! The curry Cam made was just right, it had a bit to it, but didn't burn the mouth, the coconut milk balanced it out, plus she added some lime juice, that tones down the spiciness. It was so good!
Aldi's brownie mix is around a dollar and a half a box, add two eggs, half cup of oil (sometimes I use melted butter, or a mixture of that and coconut oil), and the three tablespoons of strong coffee, and they are so good. I never make only one box though...they ate them up today!
