friday again....

And yes, I did have a cupcake with my coffee just now....blah, I was hoping the big kids would eat them all up this morning. I shall have no more, I shall put them away where I can't see them, and give them to kids when they get home from school. Camille just finished the frosting off the top of hers, she will be asking for another one soon.

Sonja K. is home today. I have been much better about sending the kids to school every day, but she banged her foot on the wall yesterday, and it is hurting SO badly...she took a shower this morning and got all dressed pretty, hair brushed and ready to go...then she said her foot hurt too much to put her shoe on....oh, the drama! She is good, really good. And here she sits, playing Barbies with the girls....and the good thing is, she assures me, that she CAN get her boots on, so she CAN go to the movies with us tonight, she just can't wear her sneakers. And she had gym today in school.

The movies....there is a "cheap" theater a ways from here, near the big city. $1.75 a ticket...the movie, "Tangled" is playing there tonight. Paul and the older kids are going to work at the Dome so I am thinking of taking a bunch of younger ones. Charlotte Claire and Camille have never been to a movie, we rarely go.

As Emily says, it is the little things in life that make kids happy.

Timmy is coming over today. Timmy is four and a half, but he is the baby of his family of eight children. He only has two sisters, who are 15 and 8, then five brothers. So he comes over here, and plays house with my two little princesses. They love having a "dad". They are very excited that he is coming to play. He has some speech delays, and can be difficult to understand. My girls are starting to understand this now, but when he first came over, Camille thought he was just kidding the way he was speaking, and kept telling him not to talk like a baby. I had to stop her fast!

Having older kids in the house is interesting. They don't just jump up and down about Mommy's good ideas, they have strong opinions and they know much much more than their Mommy does. They hog the washing machine and dryer, taking out loads that are in their way and heaping them onto the couch, they eat salads and hog up all the fresh produce within a few days, some of them eat all the ice cream, and some of them leave tea mugs and coffee cups all over the house. They are not gung-ho for those childhood favorite dinners anymore, like macaroni cheese and hot dogs or pancakes for dinner. They think nothing of using up tons of frozen strawberries to make one smoothie. They run on their own schedule, except for dinner time, which is universally respected here. They complain about gas prices, they let me buy clothes for them, then spend their own money on video games. And they are moody. I don't know if my comments will be laughed at or, they will be like, "Mom!!" I tell someone they look nice, and i hear, "MOM! I do not! You are just saying that!" But.....the joys outweigh these things. They are SO funny. They are my friends. They do things for me, they make me feel young.

My hands are cold. It is a balmy 31 degrees, but the wind is fierce. I took Miss Rosie out this morning, and haven't warmed up yet. I am thinking about my warm bed, but I cannot go climb into it. I have things to do. And princesses to watch.

Camille liked the frosting and the berries on these luscious strawberry cupcakes Mirielle made. I can't blame her, it was cream cheese and butter and vanilla...super creamy and yummy...

They really like playing swimming pool with the dollhouse people....

Dinner tonight: teryaki chicken, basmati rice, soaked and baked with peppers and onions and diced tomatoes with garlic. And broccoli and mixed veggies.
And now it is the end of another day...Emily came to visit, she tucked some kids in to bed....she has to work for the next four nights, so we won't see her again for a while....

good morning!!!

I am in a very happy mood this morning, for no apparent reason. Perhaps because the sun is shining, although it is very deceptive..it is ten degrees out there. I took Miss Rosie out for her morning walk, and oh my goodness it was cold.

Perhaps I am happy because although Sonja forgot the Goldfish crackers I bought for her snack (after calling me no less than four times to remind me last evening, poor child), Mirielle and Joseph are taking the old blue car to the shop, so they can bring her snack to school. I might need to beg and cajole, but I am willing to do that.

Perhaps I am glad that I finally have the paint and spackle for the kids' room.

Or maybe it is that Camille The Huggy One is cuddled up to me with her nice footy jammies on.

Whatever it is, I will take it. I like being happy. Although I do wish some things were different:

1. I wish I was one of those high-energy moms. The kind who don't have to go sit down after sweeping a few rooms.

2. I wish I could put things back where they belong, every single time....not always waiting until later.

3. I wish I could be consistent in where I put things away. It took me years to finally always put the peanut butter in the same cupboard. My cupboards reflect my personality....one has to look in four places to find a can of kidney beans.

4. I wish I had the time and energy to organize everything for once and for all, and keep it that way.

5. I wish someone else would come along and organize everything for once and for all and keep it like that, so I could just play with the kids.

5. I wish I didn't have to fight so hard against procrastinating. I don't know why I can't just DO what I am supposed to do without all the "putting it off"....

6. I wish I could spend time with Ben before summer. It seems like a cruelly long time.

7. I wish I could spend more time with Paul...but I am also glad I feel that way.

8. I wish I could spend more time with my sister and sister-in-law....life is speeding by, and we don't have enough breakfasts out.

9. I wish I could let the kids skip school at least once a week each without any nagging from the school.

10. I wish, as long as I'm wishing, that I had a huge new house with lots of cupboard space and a few more bathrooms and another washer and dryer....a big garage that I could pull that big van into, and bring the groceries right into the spacious pantry on those freezing cold nights.

11. I wish our well water wasn't so iron-y (we do have an iron filter, but it only does so much...) . It is hard water, and leaves sediment on the dishes and everywhere it splashes.

12. I wish Rosie would listen to me better.

And with that, I should mention that I AM thankful for my lot in life. I am thankful for my kids, and the house I have, and my big horrible van, and that Paul has a job, and that the older ones are doing well and finding their way in this world. (Mali was accepted to nursing school!!! Sixteen years old, and graduating a year early, and she was actually accepted....to be blunt here, I thought she was setting herself up for disapointment, but I was wrong!)

And yes, I know I can just try harder to accomplish some of the things I wish for. I know that. And I also know that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, and that we as people are just never satisfied. So today I shall do what I can do, and really fight to be at rest about the rest of it. Because really, our life here is so temporal. As I tell the kids, gaining treasures in heaven is the important part.

19 degrees and windy....

I got a present in the mail the other day. Paul's parents bought a new camera, and sent me their old one. Yay!!! I went to Walmart to get a card reader so I could put pictures on my computer....we went to Sears, then Walmart, then BJ's, then Price Chopper...Evelyn had the camera in Walmart...here I am, waiting for the paint to mix. It was sad, the man who mixed the paint was old and pale and week, and he had huge bruises on his arms and hands, and a bloody seeping bandage where he has obviously had an i.v. I am thinking leukemia, he reminds me of my father in his last days. I was teary-eyed....it is just too sad to spend one's final days mixing paint at Walmart.... Miss Margaret Cheryl lin her new spectacles.

Benjamin's official basic training photo.

Suzanne just turned ten years old. Here are my children ten years ago....Emily was sixteen, Abigail 14, Benjamin 12 (he is holding newborn Suze in the pic), Mirielle was 11, Joseph 9, Aaron 8, Mali almost 7, Samuel 5, Margaret 4, Kathryn almost 3, and Evelyn (being held by Abigail) was 18 months. An even dozen. (little did we know that Sonja K. would join us 14 months later..)

Samuel James in his new specs....

That dashing woman from Walmart again....
Kathryn made Sonja's lunch for her the other night, and left a nice note:

Charlotte Claire with an orange.

Miss Sulky Sue

Oh, I like to open muffins, Mommy....Camille Anaya

pumpkin muffins = yum

these two little princesses helped mix....
Phew, what a night.....after we got their glasses in Sears, we shopped around a little, clearance racks of course. I got some jeggings for Kathryn for $3.49, and a few other reasonable things. Then a quick run into BJ's for Sonja's class snack. I got the huge box of Goldfish crackers. (and three bags of M&M's, shh!)(I DID have a coupon!) Then into Walmart for paint for kids' room, finally, and a few other things.....then, oh the groaning from Evelyn and Margaret when they found out we were going to Price Chopper...but I had coupons for things that were on sale! I got a huge overflowing cart full of groceries for $106.
Today Camille looked at me and said, "You do not know everything!"
Today Jonathan said he made me a heart, but he lost it, but he THINKS it said, "I love you."
Today I taught Rosie-The-Bad-Dog how to catch, and surprise surprise, she can actually catch a toy.
Today I accomplished approximately 24 percent of what I set out to do. Things just distract me. Like teaching Rosie to catch when I was sweeping the floor. And cutting out pillows and blankets for Barbies while cleaning off the desk. Then cutting Barbie sized towels out of an old towel. Then helping them make a bed out of the empty tissue box. Then making mustaches and glasses on the pictures of people in the coupon section while cutting coupons.....I cut pictures out for the girls, who got their own markers and started making the people all look funny.
Today I tried to consciously eat smarter....can't say I lost ten pounds, but I was more careful. Then Mali came in and asked if we had any chocolate....oh, peanut M&M's.....rats.
Today I WAS REALLY GOING to go on the treadmill. But alas, the day slipped by me again. This might be a good thing though, after all the walking I did shopping, plus taking Rosie-The-Bad Dog outside three times had my knees aching like toothaches by the time I was ready to sit in my comfy chair.
Tomorrow I shall stay home. When I said goodnight to Miss Camille tonight, I told her so. I told her we would have tea again. She said, "for breakfast?" She knows how to play her cards.
Today I bought another item for Charlotte Claire's kindergarten clothes collection. A $3 shirt and leggings set from Walmart. Cute and pink. (She shall wear it with a skirt.) I also bought her and Camille these precious fleece jackets, which I shall photograph them in.
My fingers are cold and the house is quiet....even Rosie is sleeping....hmm, I could fall asleep right in this chair.....

blustery and cold with snow showers moving in...

blah. I have to go out and about this afternoon, and it is going to be snowy. And cold and windy. At least I finally got my warm furry boots from the minivan, they had been there since the trip. It just ain't sandal weather here in central New York these days.

The kids' glasses are in at the Sears Optical department in the mall in the suburbs, 40 minutes away. They want their glasses, I don't blame them. So I am being a nice mommy and bringing them down there after school. Mirielle and Joseph already got theirs, now Aaron and Mali and Sam and Margaret need theirs...although I think Aaron is only getting contact lenses...his glasses are still good. Mali got both because her glasses are taped together, and because I am a nice mommy. Only either glasses or contacts is covered by insurance.....

So, since I am driving all the way down there in the big gas-hog-of-a-van, I shall also go into the Price-Chopper to get a few things they have on sale. The kids won't protest too much, since they know I am nice to take them to get their glasses...see, I told them I wasn't going until Friday....then I found out there is a Dome event, and Paul and all the older ones will be there....then another Dome event on Saturday....then on Sunday Paul leaves for Boston for a few weeks for work....which admittedly has nothing to do with picking up glasses....oh, and Joseph and Aaron and Samuel will be at a young brothers' conference all for the weekend, too.

Yesterday I had to fill out excuses for some of the unexcused absences the school had on file for the elementary kids. The state requires a note, and if the absences is unexcusable, like missing the bus or oversleeping, the state will not excuse it and it is ILLEGAL. Well...imagine my joy and surprise when I saw it listed that when Mr. Jonathan's jacket zipper broke as he was going out the door one freezing morning in December, when I told him to stay home because his other coat's sleeves were shrinking and the cuffs were inching toward his elbows...I couldn't send him in a girl's coat....so he got a day off. Well, apparently it was ILLEGAL. I sent in a note, AND talked to the nurse on the phone. But it is ILLEGAL to keep your child home for that reason. America....is she really free?

New York state is full of laws and red tape. In Oklahoma, people carry guns. Their cars have tinted windows, they talk on their cell phones while driving, they sport no helmets while motorcycling. I am not saying this is all safe behavior, especially the lady who pulled in front of Joseph, then slowed down and was weaving all around the road...she was texting. Going over 70 miles per hour, and texting. I guess laws are for people who cannot think for themselves. (that was another thing, we crossed into Oklahoma, and 75 miles per hour on the highway...wow. )

It is snowing now, and the wind is blowing....winter, winter, winter....so long and exhausting! My girls want to go outside to play!

Yesterday the girls "helped" me make pumpking muffins with cinnamon streusel topping....super yummy. Then we had "tea" and hot muffins. The first thing Charlotte Claire said to me this morning was, "Can we have a tea party today?" See, I do these things instead of the things I should be doing....always have, always will. Until the day comes when I have no little ones to have tea with. Then perhaps I shall do what Martha does, tend to a "garden"....

What will I do if I wake up one fine morning and have absolutely nothing to blog about?

I think today I shall clean my house so clean the kids won't recognize it when they come home today.

What will I do with everything?

Is the top of the dog cage really the best place for the library books?

blah....it is snowing so hard I can barely see the trees out back....

wallace and grommit....

A box came in the mail today. A new dvd, 4 hours of Wallace and Grommit. The kids have it in now, after our dinner of spaghetti and meatballs. It is cozy in here, and very pleasant as long as I don't look down at the floor all decorated with dollies and trucks. Camille is on the arm of my chair, in a frilly dress and princess shoes, pink shiny headband, and pink beads around her neck. And thumb in her mouth.

These two little girls of mine, Charlotte Claire, 4, and Camille Anaya, 3, don't get bored very often. They play and play. Yesterday they decided to "play store with real food", which is exactly what it sounds like. They raid the closet, and get out the toy cash register, along with piles of store plastic bags. They move one of the end tables away from the wall, get behind it, and there is their check-out. Yesterday they bought lots of groceries and brought them "home", which was my room....

Today, they needed something to do so I got out a dishpan and their dollhouse pool, filled them up with water at the table, and they played with their dollhouse people in the water for at least an hour. Water is not a biggie to clean up, and it is so much fun for them. This is fun with tea sets and toy dishes, too. I have also found it fun for them when I bring in a few cookie sheets of snow, they can drive little cars in it and play in it.

This afternoon I experienced some true joy. Here is what happened: two of my older kids got into an arguement. It was about something stupid, they were both RIGHT, and they were strong. They went back and forth for a few minutes, getting more and more upset with each other....one slammed off......so....fast forward about 15 minutes....one of them comes into the room and apologizes, the other quickly apologizes too. A tiny bit of awkwardness, then peace. I was totally blessed by this. I told them each very quietly that THIS is what the gospel is all about. THIS is what it means to follow Jesus. It isn't about the hair and the clothes and the rules....

21 degrees, but it IS sunny....

My three elementary kids got ready and waited outside because it was so nice out there. Then I found out it was 21 degrees. But hey, it isn't snowing, and it isn't windy and dark, so it is therefore "nice out".

As I see my kids growing up seemingly right before my eyes, I want to capture the moments and hold on to their littleness. Last evening, we had story time in my room. The little girls had been playing on my bed and had just the small lamp on, so it was cozy. They hurried to get jammies on and brush teeth....then onto my big comfy bed with some books. Jonathan read the books, and the little girls wanted to read too, so he would read lines and whisper them to them, and they would repeat them. It was too cute. Then we had Back Rub Time, and then I told them a story....by this time, my rational mind was screaming that Jon SHOULD BE IN BED BY NOW, but I didn't listen to that. We cuddled up and talked and they were so relaxed, they went to bed wonderfully....Suzanne was still working on her book report in her bunkbed with the little lamp on, but Jon just climbed into his bed and fell asleep.

Yesterday I was going grocery shopping...I procrastinated until the older kids got home from school, then took Miss Evelyn Joy with me, along with Charlotte Claire and Camille. I figured they need to get out of the house too. We went to Wegmans where I got bananas and oranges and grapefuit and carrots and potatoes and red peppers and romaine and burger and wheat bread and eggs and chicken wings and butter and cereal....then to BJ's for shampoo and fabric softener and half and half for the coffee, and barbecue sauce and mozzarella cheese and black olives and basmati rice and SpongeBob fruit snacks..... I wish I could say the girls were So Good, but alas, they were not. They were fine in Wegmans, but by the second store...well, they started out okay....Evelyn was pushing them in a cart, they have double carts there so kids can sit side by side...well, they were kissing each other on the lips, which was freaking Evelyn out...she wanted them to STOP IT. They then thought it was really funny to get her so mad....rrr. Ev was walking behind me, and I am rather paranoid of getting bumped with the cart behind me...hmm, I wonder why that is...perhaps it has happened to me like a MILLION TIMES through the years....she kept insisting that she was FINE and was NOT going to bump me...well, wouldn't you know, when I least expected it, I was stopping to look through my coupons, and BAM. My knees buckled, she hit me so hard. And since I didn't react like, "Oh my darling Evelyn, you bumped me, but it is okay....", she got upset and walked away from the cart. So I ended up apologizing to HER.....blah...

Home with groceries, and dinner time....rice and chicken and green beans. Mirielle was so blessedly making yummy cookies for Suzanne to take to school today to celebrate her birthday, which was during vacation. Paul was at a board meeting at church, but I had plenty of help. Everyone else was home.

It looks like everything I accomplished yesterday is erased and has to be done again today. Good thing I have tons of energy and feel great! ha.

One of the things I hate is when I ask a child to put something away. Later, it is still there. So I ask again, and am told, "I WILL, Mom!" Then the next day, as in today, it is still there. rrr. Child is at school, shall I call the office and ask to talk to her? But my irritation has to be dealt with because otherwise the child would be in big trouble, when in fact it isn't actually a crime that has been commited, just forgetting.

I am nice and warm and cozy here in my comfy chair. I have my fuzzy slippers on, and a pink fleece blanket over me. Rosie is sleeping in her cage, the little girls playing nicely. I could fall back asleep.....but I have to get up and get some things done....I am thinking that someone should give me a nice little newborn baby to take care of....I mean, there are so many unwanted babies out there.....even if we just counted the ones that were thrown in dumpsters....if those mamas would just give them away instead....I wish there was a way to channel all those babies to people who would love and cherish them. I guess I am still going through withdrawl from rocking babies for so many years. Camille DID sit and snuggle with me this morning in her blanket-footy jammies, but......
