snow snow and more snow....

This year we just keep getting the snow. I looked on the weather map, and the town a few miles north of here isn't even getting it....it just keeps coming....it looks lovely, like a snowglobe out the window, but getting the driveway and deck steps cleared all of the time is getting old. Wait, that sounds like I am personally getting sick of shoveling. What I meant was that I am getting tired of GETTING people to shovel.

The thing I hate the most about winter is when the toilet seat is freezing cold. Of course I do realize that a long time ago it was worse, a trip through the drifts to the outhouse with the Sear's catalog, but that doesn't help when I sit on that cold seat. Some of you are probably wondering along the lines of HOW COLD IS THEIR HOUSE??? Well....it isn't as cold as the unheated bedroom over the unheated garage that was my room growing up....we used to put cups of water on the windowsill to see it freeze solid during the night. The room was an addition put on by the previous owner, no heat ducts ran to it. Probably no insulation, either. brr. Our house is very well insulated, it is only 19 years old. But it is big, and we keep the thermostat low, and wear sweaters....

The other thing I hate about winter is when I wear a long skirt, which does keep me warmer than a short skirt, except for when the bottom of it gets all snowy and then it melts and I have on a wet cold skirt. I am learning to wear leggings, though. I also hate that I never remember to wear gloves, and that it is so hard to clear the snow off the huge van. I also hate that it takes all the livelong day for the van to heat up, and it is so difficult to drive on slippery roads.

I am sort of kidding about hating everything. Although I do hate when my fingers are cold and I can't type worth anything....

Things I love about winter:

1. Little girls in footed jammy sleepers.

2. Bigger girls in footed jammy sleepers.

3. Baking cookies.

4. Baking bread.

5. Soups and stews and oven dinners.....

6. The days I don't have to leave the house...

7. My electric blanket. I finally hooked it up last night, oh heavenly to get into a warm bed....every other thought I have had this morning has been of a possible nap in that warm bed with the library book Emily brought me.

8. When things get cancelled in the evening because of the snow and we all stay home and sit around the dinner table for a few hours solving the world's problems....

I am sure there are more, but I thought of a few more things that I hate....

1. Having warm boots and mittens and gloves and hats and snowpants for all of the kids. Suzanne does not have any boots all of the sudden.

2. When they go out to play and their coats or boots or gloves are still wet the next morning when it is time for school.

3. When the teachers want them to bring outdoor gear to school "just in case they go outside". Okay, no problem..ha.

4. Getting home from shopping in the van that has finally gotten warm, and carrying bags up the deck steps in the cold....

5. The ice and slush that is so slippery to walk on....I do not want to fall.

Okay, okay, I understand that the Hates outweigh the Loves....but that's allright. I will survive. It is just fun to grumble a bit.

I got a letter written and sent out to Benjamin again this morning, that makes me feel good. He wrote that it is just excellent to get mail. I wrote the letter while getting three kids ready for school, while Joseph was getting ready for work, and while Mirielle was eating breakfast after arriving home from the gym. I would write a sentance, help Jonathan figure out his homework that he never got to last night, write some more, brush Sonja's hair, write some more, suggest what footwear Suze should wear....anyway, it probably isn't a very good letter, and I also am aware that they soldiers have to do pushups to recieve their mail, in boot camp anyway, so I feel guilty if it is not a good letter. Ben says any letter is worth it, but hey, I still feel guilty sending a gyp-y one.

Well, time to chip away at the mountain of laundry....

just another wednesday afternoon....

This morning, after getting the children cheerily onto the school bus, except for Suzanne who did not have one single shirt to wear...and do the two children who went on the second bus because they did not wake in time for the first bus count as "cheerily"? The only excuse the school will take for a legal excuse is that the children are sick, which makes no sense, because why would they go on second bus trip, to school, if they are sick? But I guess it is just plain illegal to oversleep or miss the bus because you left your sneakers at the other door or because your little sister is in the shower in the bathroom where your toothbrush is.

Anyway, this morning I cheerfully left the house at 9:00 am to bring Ashley to take her college placement test. The roads were not great, and I of course had plenty to do here, but life is short, and if we are only happy and kind and nice when we are doing things we really want to do, then people like me would be pretty sorry to be around. After I dropped her off, I went to Rite-Aid. I found a few treats for the kids for 75% off, and some lotions for the girls for 75% off (Nivea is so nice!), and even a few strings of lights for next year. Then I headed up to the college, because we thought it would be about an hour....well, it was another two hours.....I waited there, because the roads are awful, and I thought the whole time she would be out any minute now....so for two hours, I read receipts in my purse, ate the three pieces of candy someone left on my van the other day (I THINK it was my cousin I saw in the store....), looked at the pictures I carry in my purse, listened to Glen Beck, and even some of El-Rushbo. The van was mighty low on gas, so I turned it on and off a few times, it is only about 18 degrees outside, brr.

And finally she texted me and was coming out....we were starving, so we went to McD's for hot coffee and some lunch....then to Walgreen's to print out some wedding pictures...then to Walmart to get some carrots and celery and cucumbers and two boxes of crackers. I can't remember ever spending only $13 in Walmart....then back to Walgreens to pick up the pictures. Ashley bought a Lindt chocolate bar for the ride home.....and it was a good ride home....

Well....home again home again, jiggity gig. I could not back into the driveway because there was too much snow. I tried, and it started getting stuck....so I parked on the side of the road, and Ashley and Mirielle shoveled part of the driveway for almost an hour, now Kathryn and Aaron are having a turn. Then Aaron is going to park the van for me...thankfully the snowplow had just come before we got home...because if it comes when one is parked in the road, it honks and honks 'til the vehicle is moved....and if the vehicle won't go into driveway, what would one do?

So I am thankful today for people who can shovel...if it were me alone, blah....

The girls were very naughty today when I was gone, although Camille Anaya steadfastly maintains that, "I did not do that, Mom." They dumped out three boxes of cereal for Rosie, then somehow got it all over the livingroom. It isn't just the crumbs in the corners, it is the waste of the new SpecialK with Berries, the huge-o bag from the huge-o box from B.J.s....wah. Suzanne was here with them, and Mirielle. Suze gave them a time-out.

The driveway is now clear! Thank you, guys!

The second trip kids will be home soon now....

yes martha, I know it is freezing out there.

Today it was so so cold in here...then Paul, who is a sleuth, found out why: someone had turned off the furnace, although of course no one did it.

That is why Mirielle made the cookies, to warm it up in here...but the cookies are gone now, and the house is chily again...even when the furnace is turned on, we keep it low....I have my furry Christmas slippers on, and am cuddled under my blankie. I just wrote a letter to Benjamin. I am missing him. We got a letter from him today. He told me that the whole platoon was supposed to memorize the "chain of command", and only about ten guys actually did. The guys who didn't had to write it 500 times, then 1,000, and now it is up to 1,500 times....so when the guys are writing these things, he gets to write letters.... although most of his are to Ashley. I tease her and ask her to read them out loud....

Today is one of those days that I feel sick and tired of cleaning and cleaning and cleaning and cooking and doing laundry and then cleaning some more....just sick of it...but what good is that going to do, for me to get sick and tired of everything? Emily, my oldest daughter, says the definition of growing up is when you get up in the morning even when you are tired....I say it is also doing what has to be done when you do not feel like doing it. I was doing exactly that this evening, and lots of thoughts were knocking on my brain, but I decided right then and there to say NO to the grumbling, and just do what has to be done, and be happy. And it worked....I got happy....I still don't like the cleaning and cleaning and cleaning, but....I am bound and determined to not waste my life being miserable....no matter what. I really have it good, but that doesn't mean I don't have my trials and temptations.

And now I am tired....

dentist and....guilt.

What does a mom do when a child has a cavity that needs filling? Does the mom make the appointment, then somehow not take the child because...um, because of some reason? What happens when the mom takes the child for the filling, like a year later, and discovers that the tooth is so awful it has to be pulled? Um....oops.

Fastforward to our little trip to Walgreen's....I let Sonja get not ONE, but TWO Webkins!!! (Well, they WERE only $2.99 each....

We had sloppy joes for dinner, on nice fresh rolls, and sliced green peppers, cucumbers, and celery. And some of Mirielle's hot chocolate chip cookies for dessert....AND, we made a dinner menu plan for the next four days...

Something is very wrong with my computer....damaged hard drive clusters have been detected...I think I better have Paul look at it....

cold morning....

16 degrees here this morning. The high is supposed to be 26. Brr. The bad part is that we get so used to it. Suzanne went out the door to school with these little ballerina-style shoes with no socks. She DID have leggings on, but bare feet in shoes in 16 degrees? I suggested she wear her boots, and put the shoes on in school, but that must just be too ridiculous. At first she had on some green socks, and I agreed with her that the socks had to go....I have some sheer stocking/kneehighs I can give her for next time....

Our turkey dinner was so so good last night. The bummer of it is that while we did run the dishwasher a few times and take care of the dishes, the serving bowls and pans didn't get washed yet...and on the counter among the pans, is the full bowl of gravy...blah, sitting there spoiling...blah, no turkey soup tonight. Oh well. Nothing we can do about it now. I assigned someone to put the leftovers away after I baggied them and container-ed them, but that got missed...I should have checked....talk about tear-water-tea!

I figured a way out of driving downtown to the big city. Abigail works there. She picked up Mirielle and Ashley this morning, and Emily, who exits the city in the morning after her work as a nurse in the hospital, picked them up. So no trip to the big city today for me. Just an afternoon trip to the small city to the dentist, and so that Ashley can go to the dept. of motor vehicles....

evening...

It was bitter cold...we drove to the small city, put seventy-five cents in the parking meter, walked two blocks in the wind, and found out I had the hours for the Social Security Administration's Monday clinic WRONG. oops. I thought it started at 1:00, but it ended at 1:00. oops. Our next option was to drive to the big city, but I had the 15 passenger van, and...blah, I cannot parallel park that to save my life.

So we put it off 'til tomorrow.

And went to Wegman's. Wegman's is a special grocery store. There is something warm and cozy about it. And they have a coffee bar. Ashley, Mali, Margaret and I chose drinks, just a plain hot coffee for me with lots of cream...we got some fajitas and bananas and oranges and grapefruit and lots of greenbeans and corn and broccoli. And oatmeal. Milk. Grape juice.

Then to B.J.'s warehouse where we bought coffee and barbecue sauce and sliced turkey (yes Cheryl, they stil had some)(3 nine ounce packages for $4).....oh, and a 56 ounce bag of miniture Hershey's....which is for some reason almost gone..

Then home, where Mirelle was here with the two little girls, and the school kids...the aroma of roasted turkey greeted us....Mirielle had already peeled ten pounds of potatoes, so we made stuffing and greenbeans, and Mirielle baked her two loaves of homemade bread....well, Miss Mali had to go to a town meeting for civics class, so Joe drove her over, she had my phone and was going to call me when the meeting was over...well, she called immediately, the meeting is NEXT week. oops. Poor Mali. And poor me. All that work for the turkey dinner, and I had to leave to go get her....

I decided before I even got my coat on that this was a perfect opportunity to practice what I preach, what I hear, and what I know.....that God works ALL things for the good for those who love Him. So I went to get her, and it was good. Not because I am good, but because I decided not to give in to grumbling and complaining...I SO wanted to straighten her out...but WAIT A MINUTE....WHO was the one who had the Social Security hours wrong???!!!! Anyway......Abigail arrived right as I was leaving...so when I got home, I finished my dinner in good company....

The clean-up is not done yet, well, the dishwasher is running, but there are so many dishes that won't fit...and there are pans to wash...blah.

When I got home today the little girls told me that they were good when I was gone, they didn't go into my bathroom and dump all the conditioner like they did on Saturday while I was at the baby shower. It is so nice to come home to Miss Camille and her hugs and snuggles....

The kids are excited because Emily is picking some of them up and taking them on an adventure...I am again distracted...there are at least a dozen peoples in here....

monday again already?

Life is flying by! Monday after Monday after Monday. I think I notice it more because I write everyday. Occasionally I write but don't publish it, because it is really lame. But I save it....

It is snowing out, big surprise. We went to a wedding shower for a friend at church last evening, and I was concerned while we were there about the trip home on those awful back roads. It was not fun, but not too terrible. The shower itself was nice, the bride-to-be recieved three crockpots, and yes, one was from me. We had lots of yummy snacks, which was dinner for me, but the best thing was the bruschetta and garlic chips.

So when I wasn't dreading the drive home in the snow, I was trying to fend off the guilt of not being home with the kids again. I had already been to a shower the day before....

And to add to the guilt....I got the girls some princess pajamas the other day, marked down 80% off. Two pair came together, and of course they both claimed the same pair, which made it absolutely superior to the other pair. It was totally worth fighting over, to the sweet little girls. Camille won, because I picked the winner, and Charlotte Claire had to deal with it. She did okay because I told her she would get her turn the next night, which happened to be last night. I told Paul that it was Charlotte Claire's turn with them, and that I had to wash the other pair so Camille could wear them...oops, I never washed the other pair. Char just woke up and came out here in the Superior Pajamas, and I asked her if Camille was okay without the other pair (I saw that she was sleeping in a pair of footed jammies)...Char said, "No, she was NOT okay..."oops.

As usual, I had to go through who was where last evening, and I figured that Paul only had seven kids to feed dinner to....when I asked him how it went, he said, "fine." He managed to clean up the living room and put the furniture back to how it was before the Christmas tree. The girls say that Daddy gave them chicken and soda, and they burped really loud. Suze told me that since they had soda with dinner, she drank a cup of milk afterward. So they survived without me....

I think we are finally getting another washing machine!!!! Yippee!!!! Some of our older kids have been nagging and nagging and have requested nothing else for Christmas, if we just get another washing machine for downstairs. Paul said he thinks we can do that! It is almost impossible to keep up with the laundry. The older kids do not dry their clothes, they hang them up. But still, the washer is going all of the time. We are always behind, and when I start to catch up, someone will wet the bed or worse.....right now it looks like the laundry room itself is sick, barfing the clothes right out the doorway. I do not usually wash clothes on the weekend, I give the older ones a chance to use it. So Mondays, blah, I am so behind on laundry.....

So to make myself feel better, I imagine walking into the laundry room....the hampers are all empty, there is nothing in the washer or dryer...there isn't a stray sock to be found, they are all matched up....the floor is devoid of even a pair of dirty undies....and it isn't all that great after all....I stand there and look around, and think, "I strived for THIS all these years?!! What the heck?"

But this does not really make me feel better, because the thought of that happening is, in my lame housewife-y way, TOTALLY THRILLING!

Oh well. I don't think I even need to wonder what it would feel like.

Everyone went to school like clockwork this morning. I remembered to write the required excuses for their absence from school on Friday...and yes, I wrote, "because she/he was sick"...that is what my mother always wrote, she would say, "it is none of their business what was wrong with you..."and I decided it is none of their business that I accidentally slept through the whole morning Friday.

Charlotte Claire just asked me if her birthday is next....well, I said, first there is Emily's...(she is turning 26 this month...holy cow...I am 45....she and I are almost peers....)then Mirielle's, Kathryn's, Mali's, Suzanne's, Jonathan's, Sonja's, THEN hers.... she is asking because she is thinking about cakes, she says. She thinks a mermaid cake would be nice....

Today is not a stay at home and catch up on laundry day. No, today I have things to do. I have to pick up Mali from school, and take her and Ashley to the social security office....Mali's number got messed up, and she cannot get a job or her driving permit until we straighten it out, even though it was not us who messed it up. And Ashley has to do a name change. And we have a few more errands to do....like get more stamps. That Benjamin is getting alot of letters! We are also almost out of milk, and the wonderful oranges and grapefruit that Gramma and Grampa sent from Florida are all gone....since they are in season and reasonably priced, we need more!

So, since I am going to go galavanting in the snow, I need to get moving. I should at least put in one load of laundry, and wash my hair, and get out some cute and warm and sweet clothes for the little girls....
