old shopping mall...spooky and scary...and sad

The old Shoe Dept. store...the girls remembered going into the "clearance room" there...the mall is still open, but the only stores there are the Shoe Dept. in a smaller location, moved to across from Old Navy, which is still going strong.  Bath & Body Works is still there, and The Spirit of Halloween is where Dick's Sporting Goods was.

This candy looks a wee bit old...

My girls were probably remembering how many times I dragged them in here, as I perused the clearance racks and tried things on...it was one of the only stores I could find decent jean skirts, back when it's almost all I wore...their clearance sales were amazing, for decent clothes.

Charlotte Claire in the old Dunkin' kiosk.
This suburban mall was one of our go-to places, the one in the city is just...a bit scary, too crowded, and just too much!  In this county, a new computer chip factory is supposed to be built, so there will be employment opportunities and retail growth...I'm hoping this mall makes a come back.  Oh, the days when one could shop at Sears, and the Children's Place, and Kay-Bee toys (that was a LONG time ago!).  Toys R' Us was right across the parking lot, too much fun!  Anyway, mall walkers still walk in the mall...as we walked down the abandoned corridor, we could hear the sound effects from The Spirit of Halloween, all they way at the end, and no way did we want to go in there...the girls did find some nice things at Old Navy, it's the time of the year to buy shorts:  $2.99!  I got Anya some leggings and a top for her birthday, too.

We also went to...Target...didn't get much, a jumper for Anya, shampoo and conditioner, a candle...

The girls made pizzas last night, three mini ones from one dough.

Pepperoni, Buffalo chicken...
BBQ with onions, and...
...my "pizza", it's just mozzarella cheese on parchment with some little dollops of sauce, oregano, some Buffalo sauce, and pepperoni.  It was salty (I wonder if pizza dough cuts balances out the saltiness), but it was not too bad.  Next time I'll probably just make a few tiny bite sized "pizzas", as this was way too much, especially with the chicken wings that Evelyn picked up from the pizza place....

Today is a day off, no school, but Sonja K. has tons of work to do for nursing school.   We were going to clean out our storage room, maybe we'll do some of it...maybe not:)

stay and home and bake day...

A triple batch, all done, only a few burnt ones...I bake two pans at a time, set the timer for four minutes, and switch the pans around, upper and lower racks...well, one time I was cruising around the kitchen on auto-pilot, and I switched the pans around when the timer buzzed, and I think I switched them around to the same racks as they were on, and the ones on the bottom rack burnt a bit.  I thought I had this process down to a science, and dang.  I fill six cookie sheets before I start (If I had more sheets, I'd do more, as this recipe makes about 150 cookies)...anyway.  I made cookies.  I also made some pumpkin muffins.  Then it was dinner time, but not before vacuuming and mopping the floors and cleaning things up, and shh, sitting in my comfy chair for a break, ha.  Dinner:  chicken breasts were marinating in vinegar and cajun spices, I cut them into smaller pieces, rolled them in cornstarch and flour, then dipped in egg, then coated in breadcrumbs, onto a cookie sheet with parchment paper and olive oil, and into a 400 degree oven...I peeled some red skinned potatoes (left the good shiny parts of the peels on), and made mashies, with minced onion and garlic and salt, pepper, and lots of butter...then a bag of long green beans in the microwave, and mmm, a yummy dinner.

The girls' friends came over, and silliness ensued.  Evelyn came over and brought snacks, Grace and Irene brought cider and cookies, and they watched, "Miss Congeniality", which is quite funny.

I saw this and could relate....I'm on my 15th teenager driving, and it hasn't gotten easier, ugh.

Camille asked me the other day if I was looking forward to teaching her to drive...oh dear.

I have to drive Paul to the airport soon.  Sunny suspects something, she knows what a suitcase means.  She is going to be a sad puppy for the next few weeks.  She loves me, but Paul is her person.  She loves everyone, except for Ben, she is scared of Ben...because he said RAH to her when he first moved back here, five years ago.  When Ashley comes over, she hides under the table until she determines Ben isn't with her, then she'll come out.  She'll come out eventually when Ben is here, but she'll evade and avoid him, she doesn't growl or anything, she just keeps her cautious distance.  She's the kind of dog who sees the dog brush in your hand, and off she goes, to under the table.

It's a sinus headache day.  I woke up with it, took a nice hot shower, but it didn't go away.  Perhaps I'm getting a cold, blah.  I don't like just taking ibuprofen willy-nilly, because even if it's over-the-counter, there are still side effects, but you have to live your life, too, and a Saturday with a pounder is challenging..especially when it pounds and makes you feel like you're going to toss your cookies, and I don't even eat cookies!

Yes, that's the hard part, I should be skinny, it's not fair.  I baked all those cookies, and didn't even have a taste of the dough, not a bite of one.  The house smelled heavenly all day, and I enjoy making them, I just know that I cannot eat them....last time I told myself nonsense, you can eat a cookie!, I ate like ten.  I did have a few Hershey kisses last night though....

Anyway.  Have a nice cozy Saturday...

it was a dark and rainy morning...

...the lamps weren't on, just a kitchen light, giving the living room a dusky, shadowy hue.  The dogs were snoring, and the geese were honking.  The coffee was getting cold, but getting up to make another meant leaving the comfy chair, so she sipped at the dregs, and wished there were a waitress with a hot pot, hovering about, not judging her for being lazy.

But, lazy she was.  Yesterday, oh my!  Kathryn needs a new car seat, and Target had one in stock, I had a 20% off coupon, so off we went, after Camille's physical therapy appointment.  (Target didn't actually have any, although it showed in their app that they had two).

Rhys really wanted this singing, dancing pumpkin, but Grammy didn't buy it.
Achilles was getting a brand new plastic snake!  nope, nope, nope
Okay, so I'm old and crazy, and when I saw this, I decided that yes, I do need a new crockpot for twenty bucks.  It wasn't until I got out to the car and read my receipt:  it came up $54.99.  ?  I didn't need a new one that badly!   So my favorite thing, going back in the store to the service desk.  The nice lady wasn't actually so nice, she just said, "That's for the small one!", as if I were stupid, and I guess I was, because I didn't put my glasses on and read the small print on the tag, there were two of the same crockpots on the shelf there, and I assumed, which we all know about that.

The REAL price for the crockpot was located down on the bottom of the bottom shelf where the crockpots were SUPPOSED to be, but who can see all the way down there?  And who would think to look down there, when the pots are up here?  oh dear.  It wasn't a great big deal, but jeepers.

We got home, put our things away (just a package of chicken breasts, and some new sweatpants for me...I love a nice new pair, I wear them every day around the house, 40% off, still pricey, but they had them in my size, and they weren't black or gray, like my other ones, a nice light brown...Camille got a sweatshirt, and a bra from the clearance rack, and we bought some sour gummy worms).

Home...not for long!  I had a package to bring up to Sam, and I have been wanting to visit Sam and Grace and see their new place.  I brought Grant a little car and track set, where you send the car flying through the loop-t-loop...it was fun, and it's Grandma's job to spoil the grandkids a little tiny bit, right?

This is a pic I stole that Grace posted from the playground the day before...Grant is a nice big brother for Ruth.  I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them and getting some snuggles and hugs.

Home again, ahhh...but not for long:  the girls needed a ride to the youth meeting, as Sonja was swamped with homework and couldn't go...so Mariel so nicely agreed to drive them, if I drove them to over to her house.  Then, finally, home....it was seven o'clock at night, and I hadn't eaten yet!  So, bacon and eggs it was...I also had some cut up apples and cucumbers, and blueberries and raspberries, mmm.

This fine morning, I should be going to water aerobics, but I'm tired of going going going, that's my excuse today, plus I'm baking cookies and muffins today...Paul is leaving for Budapest, Hungary tomorrow and wants to bring some cookies for his co-workers, plus the girls are selling some tomorrow for their coffee shop at church.

I hope to stay home today, ahh home.  The girls are having friends over tonight, they'll maybe turn on the fire table on the deck, or come in here and do karaoke...I'll make some stove top popcorn, and put out some snacks, it'll be fun.

Tomorrow, bringing Paul to the airport....wah.

In other news, we're dealing with the Invasion of the Stinkbugs.  These little devils are disgusting, and I hate them.  They come out in the sunshine and congregate on the side of the house, on the outsides of the windows, and of course they come in wherever they can manage.  So I keep the vacuum cleaner out in plain sight, plugged in, so I can nab them when I see them.  I am not going to just sit around and let them thrive, I go outside and whack them, and I have traps set up...bins of soapy water with vinegar in them, they are attracted to that and I've gotten quite a few....I've sprayed them with bleach water, they're so strong and resistant, it hardly slows them down.  I tell myself that it could be worse, they could bite!  They could move faster!

Oh, never a dull moment.  Aaron and Riley have given Jonathan their old car...they live in Phoenix now, and Jon is in Germany...Jon priced it out to fly to Phoenix, drive the car here, visit for a few days, and fly back to Germany...then he decided that for the same price, he can have it shipped here, so in a few days, a car will be arriving, and I HAVE to be here to sign for it.

Ah well....I think I need to get the butter out to soften, and mosey over and make another cup of coffee...and yes, as a matter of fact I DO feel a little guilty that life's pace is slower for me, when so many people are so busy all the time...Paul is in there working his rear end off, and here I am...but to be fair, there were years and years of days...days so busy my head would spin, days and weeks and nights unending with very little sleep, and babies and toddlers and children and teenagers, who all wanted one thing, and that one thing was ME.  I'm a little less popular now, so I'll mosey in and get that coffee....

an itty bit of fun...

Evelyn Joy, and yes, she bought the kitty mask...I think the guy in the background was glad he went shopping yesterday, he was quite entertained.
So many choices!
Camille is patient with us kids.

What!?  I had to try it on too!  I remind myself of my mother...
Evelyn with all of her fun stuff...

We had gone to the thrift store, all Evelyn bought there were some Sorel boots for Wulf, I got a few books and a wood car track for the grand kids.

Camille's dr. visit was a good one, the NP we see is thorough, and was concerned about the "rash", it has gone away, but I showed her some pictures.  She hadn't gotten a copy of the lab work, they never send these things when they say they will.  She confirmed that if the CBC was good, and Cam didn't have those outbreaks anywhere else, or since that time a few weeks ago, she is probably fine.  She said she would get a copy of the labs, and call me if it was concerning...

She called when we were on our way home from our fun, driving along admiring the random crimson leaves set among the greens, golds, and oranges.  You know, I got a bit anxious, when I realized who was calling, and I kept expecting her to say BUT...she said Camille's CBC was absolutely fine, red counts, white counts all good.  The Epstein-Barr (mono) test was negative, and the other tests they ordered which were inconclusive, were because they didn't have enough blood for them, but they weren't necessary because of the good results of everything else...so nothing to worry about.  Call if it returns...

So it was a relief....

Evelyn came over to visit for a while, we sat on the deck and enjoyed the sunshine...the days are getting shorter, and cold is coming...so we need to get that vitamin D while we can.

we go bye-bye...

...in the car-ar...this we used to sing as we got ready to go out the door.  Anyone else sing all the time, changing the words to fit the situation?

This fine morning is quiet, Miss Charlotte Claire got on the bus, Sonja K. left for lab, all professional in her nursing white coat, Camille is in her room, the dogs are snoring, Paul is in our room/his office, working.  I've done a few things around here this morning, but not much.  I'm on the second cup, the last cup until afternoon, when I'll have one more.

Camille has an appointment for a check-up, and to find out if anything is amiss, due to that scary "rash" a few weeks ago.  Evelyn has a day off from work today, so she's driving down to come with us, so we can go thrifting and maybe other adventures, afterwards.

Yesterday was just an ordinary Target day, but oh dear, it's so nice to go with Kathryn and the kids!  I get to push Rhys in the cart.  She has a little cold, and is a little cranky, and she sneezed and sorry!  I'll spare the details, but I couldn't find a tissue in my purse, just a mask(it worked!)...so I picked out a box of tissues and opened them, but of course we bought them.

She likes me, and likes to sing, and likes to grab things, and is used to sitting nicely in the cart, and she does look for her mama when we wander off, but not in a crying way, just a curios way, Mama!   Too cute.  Well, we walked up and down the toy aisles, because grandma loves toys, and the Cocomelon piano was on sale for $8.99 (regularly $14.99), so I handed one to Rhys.  That kept her totally occupied and happy, and I sang along with the ABC's, I don't really care who thinks I'm crazy, Rhys likes it.

Random:  Paul and our oldest, Emily, a long long time ago...he was Mr. Handsome.
Rhys with her little piano...so cute!
I had this snowsuit in the laundry room, I got it for 99 cents a while back at the thrift store, looks absolutely brand new.  (I washed it of course).

She will be warm for her first New York winter, there are little booties that go with it too.

One of my stops today when I go out and about is to a little coffee roaster place near the prison.  Did you know that the small city where we do lots of our shopping and dr visits is home of a maximum security prison, the only city in the country with such a facility within city limits?  Well, a few doors down from that is a little place that roasts coffee beans to order, and it's the absolute best coffee I've ever had.  It smells positively heavenly.  And shh, of COURSE I never pointed to the prison and told my kids if you're bad, you'll grow up and go there.

Ah well, time to get moving.  As the days get cooler and it's dark and cozy in the morning, it's easier to spend too much time in my comfy chair...tomorrow morning Cam has physical therapy, early, and Friday, I hope to get back to water aerobics...I am also going to be doing some baking on Friday, for the weekend...the girls run a little coffee shop at church, and we're gathering on Saturday, for a mission feast (raising money for churches in poorer countries), and Sunday too.  So I'll bake pumpkin muffins and chocolate chip cookies to sell with the coffee...

Too bad I can't think of anything else to write about, this chair is pretty nice...off I go...

....good news!

So it turns out that Paul's eye issue is part of normal aging.  The details of what happens to the eye as we grow old:  yucky blucky, but they definitely change, and sometimes this happens more abruptly and we notice it more.  He had leakage of fluid, but no retinal tear.  He does have to go back in to be checked in a few weeks to make sure, as when one has symptoms like that, it could indicate a retinal tear, which would have to be dealt with quickly, as to minimize damage.

And, Sonja got a 90 on that test yesterday!  It was a very difficult exam, she's so thrilled.  I didn't want to tell her it was because of kind thoughts and prayers from my blog friends, because then I'd be telling her that I blogged about her, ha.   What?  You wrote about that?!

Yesterday, Camille and I drove up to her orthopedic dr.  Her range of motion in the knee which had the surgery is 20 degrees less than the other knee, and her quads aren't nearly as strong as they'd like to see them.  So she needs to continue physical therapy and continue her exercises at home.  She was also told it's almost inevitable that her other knee will dislocate again, statistically when it happens at a young age, it happens again.  She also learned that the pain she's been having is normal, because of where nerves were severed for the surgery, and it could last for months...a year, even.  Take ibuprofen, massage it, ice it...ugh.  So, I bought her a vanilla chai from Dunkin on the way home...well, I had a free beverage reward that was expiring, ha.

We did go into Aldi, because it's right down the road from her dr., we just got potatoes and lemon juice, heavy cream, a pizza dough, and some frozen chicken wings.  I also stopped at Tops, because they have their ground beef buy one get one free this week, so 85% beef for $3.10 a pound, not bad for these days.

When we got home, I cleaned.  I washed bedding and vacuumed and straightened.  I cleaned our room because Paul was off at his appointment, his office is in our room, so I can't usually vacuum whenever I want.

In the afternoon, he had to drive up to the city where Margaret and Adrian live, so I asked Margaret if I could visit...she said yes!  :).  Grace came over with Grant and Ruth, because Sam has classes on Monday night, and Adrian was in class.

Tennyson...he knows I have gum in my purse, oh that boy!  He had so many pieces!
Wulf hugging cousin Ruth...I didn't get a pic of Grant!  Paul came to pick me up too quickly!

Home...what's for dinner at seven o'clock?  Our girls are quite self sufficient, they had already eaten (they know how to make a sandwich, a panini, or something in the air fryer).  I made some burgers for Paul and I, and some chicken in the air fryer, mmm.

These cool autumn evenings though:  how could I have forgotten, in my love for summer, how much I appreciate the coziness?  The little wax melt lantern, the string of lights illuminating the little jack-o'lanterns, the furry blankets everywhere?

This fine morning, Joseph is coming over to pick some things up, and to visit, with his puppy dogs.  Then I believe I'm going out and about with Kathryn, and Achilles and Rhys.

There was a question I saw posted recently...What characterized being "rich" when you were a kid?  We were what I would consider lower-middle class, my parents were responsible and hard working.  My father came from an extremely poor family, but worked his way up the ladder in his county job in water pollution control (the sewer plant!), taking college courses and eventually becoming a big boss.  I'm the 6th of 7 kids, so when the older ones were young, things were much tighter.  But my parents had a house, a station wagon, and a camp on Lake Ontario (Okay, it was a lovely little mobile home with a beautiful yard, down a little dirt road from the lake but with full beach rights to a small private beach, owned by all the mobile home and camp owners in the little circle).  My mother was home with us mostly, but had some part time jobs through the years...she worked at K-mart a few nights a week, she worked at the bakery in the grocery store that was walking distance from our house.

Anyway, I thought rich people had wall-to-wall carpeting.  Little did I realize that our house, with it's original hard wood floors, was rather nice.  We rarely had orange juice, (we drank Tang!), never ate out, until I was in high school and we ordered pizza once in a while, or if Burger King had a special of 3 burgers for a dollar, we would pick some up.  My parents drank instant coffee with Cremora in it, and smoked Raleigh 100's, which...you're not going to believe this, sometimes they would say..."go light me a cigarette...", and I would, on the gas stove.  My mother did quit smoking when she got converted, and my father did too, but struggled with it, then did quit again after a few years.

Ah well.  A stroll down memory lane, remembering Sunday mornings when the newspaper was divided and shared, taking turns with the comics, maybe using our Silly Putty on them, me waiting for my mother to finish with the Lifestyle section, so I could read "Ann Landers", and see the brides.  I also liked the Opinion section, with the letters to the editor, and of course the front page section...I remember reading about the first test tube baby, Louise Joy Brown, in 1978.  The K-Mart ad was probably the best part though...

Kathryn's coming over soon, I need to vacuum, these dogs shed so much...:)

Monday, October 3, 2022

ahhh such a lovely day in New York! and dull moments...

Evelyn, me, Emily, Mariel...at Keuka Lake, breathtakingly beautiful!  We went on an adventure!
Emily...
I had a few sips of this chocolate stout, mmm!
The vineyards...

This boy rode by when I was taking a picture of the scenery...
Sunny and Kitty...cozy at home...

At home:  Paul has something going on with his eye, he went to the ER today, and waited for hours, it was a total train wreck there at the hospital in Syracuse, so many waiting.  This has gotten so bad in the last few years, and our government has made it worse, firing so many healthcare professionals for not complying with mandates.  Even now, when for example  92% of Canadians who died from Covid in a short time period were fully vax-ed,  and it's a moot point because it seems to spread regardless of status, those doctors, nurses, radiologists, technicians...have NOT been called back.   Here in central NY state, there is an actual healthcare crisis.  It's chaos.  There are 20% less hospital beds than before Covid, because of lack of staffing.  Firing so many meant more work, more pressure on the ones left there, so guess what?  Lots more left.

Anyway, he has symptoms of a torn retina, and went to the E.R., waited for hours...somehow didn't bring his credit card, and since he wasn't seen before deciding to leave, he didn't get a voucher for the parking garage, which meant I had to drive to the city in the dark...and I should have been with him anyway!  He had decided not to go in yesterday, to wait until this morning and see an ophthalmologist, but then while I was gone on my adventure, he decided to go in...and no, he didn't need anyone to go with him, he said.  Well, I was over an hour in the opposite direction anyway, at that point.  So yes, Bad Wife Award.

The thing about Paul is that he is active and busy.  Emily had advised him not to sprint, run, work out, until he was seen for the eye...so he stacked up all the patio furniture and put water sealer on the deck, then finished putting blacktop on the sidewalk and the edges of the driveway.

When I got home from my fun and adventures, the girls here let the dogs out, and oh my goodness:  they ran down the sidewalk, then right into the house.  Black feet.  Black stairs, black doggy prints, all over the place.  I had to get them and wipe their paws, the girls helped me clean up lots of black marks.

I put pork chops in the oven, which had been marinating in vinegar, salt and pepper.  I chopped up some apples, onions, and potatoes, and spread it on the pans between the chops, and roasted it at 400.  Right as it came out of the oven, Paul texted to please bring him his card, he was leaving the ER.  I read in the news this morning that a 13 year old and a 20 year old came in with gunshot wounds right when Paul decided it was too crazy there and he didn't want to wait longer.

Dinner was at like 9:00 last night, in keeping with never a dull moment.  Paul is going to call the eye dr. as soon as they open, hopefully he can be seen urgently.  I am driving up to Camille's ortho appointment, 45 minutes from here, she's been having some terrible pain in the leg that was fixed with the surgery.

(one of these days I'll get back to water aerobics!)

One thing we discussed yesterday on our adventure, with Emily, Mariel, and Evelyn:  we all are glad that our kingdom is not of this world.  There is corruption:  layers and layers of it, unrighteousness, things don't make sense, and there is so much suffering.   Vengeance does indeed belong to the Lord though, and He will straighten things out.   People think they can fix things with more laws, but they are mere bandaids.   A law won't make a person see that they are being selfish, and so decide to put their phone down and pay attention to their child, or prompt them to be more patient, forgiving, responsible.

Ah well, there are things I can do something about, and things I can't, so I need to spend my days being faithful to do what I can, and not waste time and energy getting worked up about all the other things.
Today is a sinus headache day.  I woke up with it, thought it might just fade, but no, it's one of those pounders.  I took two ibuprofen, because I have to drive, and driving with a headache is not my idea of fun.  But these long drives with Miss Cam, I try to make the most of them, try to make our dr. outings fun. I've already made a nice coffee in the travel mug, two scoops of regular coffee and one scoop of pumpkin spice, with some heavy cream.

Pray for Sonja today, if you think of it and are so inclined, she is struggling a bit in nursing school.  Their class started with over 50 students, there are 13 left.  She has an extremely challenging instructor...who seems to run hot and cold, and keeping Sonja thinking at all times that she is one mistake away from being booted from the program.  It's tense, and she has a test today, in addition to a skills test.  She is in a very respected school of nursing, for several years now 100% of the graduates have passed the NCLEX...but it's stressful.  She doesn't like it when I joke that I've been through nursing school so many times now..., (right along with them!!!) this is my fifth time (actually, Joseph was accepted and lasted one semester, years ago, he didn't like it much)...of course I haven't actually been in nursing school, but I have awaited test results, ect...
Anyway...off I go, time to bring Cam to her appointment...
