....isn't it almost a miracle?

At the airport with Jonathan...
Uncle Jonny with Achilles...

He's a friendly little guy, and can you tell I only had a few hours of sleep?
Oregon...so pretty!
The little family of almost four...
No, we didn't buy the bear, but shh, I did buy him a new toy garbage truck.

The playground!
The steak!

But, what a miracle...
...to be able to FLY across the entire COUNTRY?  To drive would be 42 hours, 2,800 miles!  But hop on a plane, and wowza.  It's not really that simple of course.  We flew to Charlotte, North Carolina first, and had a short layover...shorter because our plane couldn't "dock" at it's destination, another plane was there.  Um, did they not know we were coming?

We did have enough time for a Starbucks coffee (oh yum, an iced coffee with cream!), but no food, and we weren't hungry enough to pay $7 for a sandwich there.  We had packed mixed nuts, the good ones with the Brazil nuts and pecans, and added some mixed M&M's, peanut butter, peanut, and plain.  So our plane snack was decent.  Thankfully they didn't announce any peanut allergies, or we would have been hungry indeed!

Our flight from NC to Portland Oregon was to be over five hours, but ugh, we boarded, and...nothing.  Not a thing.  We sat and sat, and the poor mama a few rows ahead of us, her baby was already crying.  It got hot on that plane and there we sat.  The pilot announced there was some issues with something, so they had to have a cart there to charge something, and the cart ran out of juice, so they had to get another one, they passed out cups of water...then they had to resupply the water...two hours of sitting there, and yay, we were ready for take-off!  People were getting grumbly, and Jon showed me the lyrics of a church song..."Tell me why we should not be extremely happy...we've a living hope that we by faith can see...midst the battles, trials and toil we gain a vision, of the glory that forever shall be...."

So we made it here at what would be almost four in the morning east coast time...and went through the Taco Bell drive through, because why not?  Two crunchy tacos in the middle of the night!

This fine morning, we woke up early so we could watch Achilles while Kathryn and Darius went in for an overdue check up...she's still here, no baby yet!

We went to the play ground, and to the store ( steak, buy one get one free!), and spent some time in the back yard.

It's nice to be here, nice to see these guys...now, we just to meet the newborn baby girl before I have to head back home!!!

once upon a time, not too far from here...

in fact, in this very house...there was chaos.  Mom and Dad don't like noise, which should be #1 on the prerequisite list for having children.  Our kids were raised that screaming is only if something is REALLY WRONG.  Yelling is something for outside, and screeching, um, nope.  We've worked to instill the No-Interrupting courtesy, a whole slew of kids just talking over each other, um, another NOPE.

They could sing and play and have fun, but at acceptable sound levels, ha.

We also taught them to be respectful of the house.  You don't just go jump PLOP down on the couch, no, you sit down gently.  You don't lean back in a kitchen chair, and you don't put your hands on the walls.  You don't slam doors, you simply close the door.  If there is a toy on the floor, don't step on it, pick it up!

My thought has always been:  these kids are not just OUR kids, they have to grow up and assimilate into society, and it's a gift to society to raise kids who are respectful.  If they can go out into the world listening politely and not interrupting, treating other people's stuff with respect, then, well, we've done a good job.

Now this doesn't mean we didn't have fun!  I was the first person to move the couch away from the wall and make a fort, or drape blankets over the table, or decide to eat dinner on the living room floor as a picnic.  We let them ride their ride-ons around in the house, and even use rollerblades, until it got too crazy, then they were done "for now", ha.  They had markers and clay and paint, and an abundance of play dough, but at the kitchen table.  I SAY this, but in reality, those little stinkers left so many markers in their rooms with the tops off...ugh.

We did try.  It was kind of controlled chaos.   I wanted them to grow up as individuals, too, able to choose as much as the wanted, how to spend their time.   Joseph always liked to make things.  We saved plastic packaging, and cardboard, and bought that kid elastic, feathers, paint, fabric...he was always making things.  You have to LIVE in the house, too, when you have kids, it doesn't have to look like a furniture showroom.  The girls went through bead phases, every time I vacuumed for YEARS, they clinked up the hose.  Aaron had a rock tumbler, and Ben had one of those little plug in creep crawly makers:  that stuff stains carpets!  We had an Easy Bake oven, but that was only used at the kitchen table.  The kitchen table was CRAZY CENTRAL, we had to clean it off before we ate, as we always ate meals together at the table...homework, projects, always at that table.

This was seven years ago, at a parade in town, with the youngest six.  Evelyn would have been 14, Suzanne 13, Sonja 12, Jonathan 10, Charlotte Claire 8, and Camille 6.

We did have fun!

Anyway, here's the current news:  Paul is getting better, but he got the thing the kids had last week, and was feeling awful yesterday.  I felt bad for him, but shh, I couldn't help but be freaked out:  I thought we were out of the woods with that sickness, that I had dodged a bullet, and was good to go on my trip.  I feel fine, but you know when someone is throwing up, you always feel nauseous.  He's much better today, but oh dear, will I get it in the airport, or on the plane, or at Kathryn's house?  Or will my immune system keep me well and healthy?  I thought, as I said, that after so many days, were all good, and I was in the clear, now I have this niggling wonder...ugh.

The truth is, I do get traveling anxiety.  This is the sixth trip I've taken since last March (California, then Florida in September, October, January, and March), and even though I've flown so many times, I always get jittery and nauseous.  I am not afraid of flying, I enjoy it.  I just don't like all the seriousness surrounding it, the official-ness.  Going through security, and making sure the water bottle is empty, and the very real fear of getting that unwanted, bordering-on-abusive pat-down, forgetting I have a hair tie in my pocket, and making the scanner BEEP.  (My mother had a bobby pin in her pocket when we went through security in Amsterdam once, and she got a whole body pat down, it was awful!)

I get all lose-y with my stuff, my passport, my phone, headphones, glasses...I don't have enough pockets, and try hard to keep things organized, but I'm always rumpling and losing stuff, and somehow I LOVE traveling.

I never know what to wear for the trip.  It's hot out, but can be freezing on the plane, but also can be sweltering on the plane.  Jeans are too restrictive, I'd unbutton them and then forget they're unbuttoned.  Leggings are good with a dress, because I am not, nor will ever be, at the place where leggings will be pants for me.  No, ain't nobody want to see that.  The dress would have to be a print, because a long day in a solid color means I'd have to be extra careful not to drip or slop, and well...my print dresses don't have pockets, and you HAVE to have pockets when you travel, so I have a dilemma.

No, I am not packed yet.  Last night I dreamed that I checked my phone, and OH NO, it was THREE O'CLOCK, the time we were to leave for the airport, and I wasn't even home, and I still hadn't packed!  In my dream, I figured out the time it would take to get home, throw stuff in the suitcase, and get to the airport, and if my dream math was correct, we would almost make it.

My suitcase does have some outfits for little Achilles, and a few things for newborn baby girl, but none of my clothes yet, because I don't know what to bring!

Ah well, first world probs, right?  I also need to get my rear end in gear and get moving because I want to go to the store and get some good traveling snacks.  I am not the type of person to hand over the credit card for a nine dollar snack box on the plane, and am rather fascinated by those who do.  Are they stupid, or just really hungry, or really rich?  I'm sort of kidding.   Some flights don't even give out water these days, the cheap flights, and even if they give out snacks, they're not the kind I usually like eat,  but if they're free...I take them, and bring them home to the kids, yes of course I do.

See how good I am at procrastinating?

I'll be bringing the laptop, and blogging in the mornings.  When you travel to the west coast, the time difference is wonderful...you can sleep to a lazy and unheard of 9:00 am, and it's only six there!  So you can lie in bed and blog while the house is still quiet....I just wish I had a coffee maker in the room ha..

I cannot wait to see my Kathryn Grace, Miss Kappy-Sue...

Bye for now...

I totally forgot!!!!

...what it's like to be hot!

All four of the critters, asking to please go in the front door with me...the look on Orange Guy's face...
Yesterday's church barbecue was fantastic...Margaret and her little Tennyson...
He's so cute!  He cooled off in the pool...
Wulf loves his balance bike...

In the afternoon, Molly and Josh came over with Lydia and Ophelia.

It's nice to be Grandma!!!

This little guy lives in Salem, Oregon, and Grandma is heading there tomorrow!

Can you believe he's going to be a big brother sometime this week?!

And to step into the time machine for a minute, this was like 11 years ago, so Margaret (green/gray stripes), Kathryn in the Senators sweatshirt, Evelyn in the red hoodie, Suzanne on the front left, and Sonja K. in the middle with the black jacket.  They were 13, 12, 10, 9, and 8 years old.  (Now they're 24, 23, 20, and 19)...my five-girls-in-a-row, in five years.  Margaret was actually five years old when Sonja was born...then six, finishing kindergarten when baby Robert was "born", born sleeping...then seven when Jonathan was born the next year...now she has two little ones (Wulf and Tennyson), and Kathryn is expecting her second ANY DAY NOW, as her due date was on Saturday!

Time flies.  When these girls were little, and my head was spinning, people would say, "Just wait 'til they're teenagers!"  It seemed unlikely that they would actually grow up, the days were long and busy.  This picture was from a night I took them to the drive in.  I think we got pizza and took it with us.  The younger kids (Jonathan was 6, Charlotte Claire 4, Camille 2) were home with Paul.

Anyways, it's hot and sticky here in central NY.  A bit too hot, and a bit too sticky.  I have to pack for my trip, and I'm thinking to go to Walmart for a fan-on-a-stick, one of those oscillating ones...last night, sleeping in our room was nightmarish, not to be a drama queen.  We do have a room air conditioner, we should put it in the window.  I don't mind so much during the day, but sleeping in the heat, ugh.  I was actually getting shivers last night as I tried to cool myself down, that's pretty hot.

Today I'm staying away from the Fauci emails, China's sneaky role in the virus cover up,  the inflation rate, the border crisis (I'm not the only one ignoring THAT!), the horror called Critical Race Theory, the new Israeli study suggesting natural immunity from Covid-19 is long lasting and as good as a vaccine, and other such goodies.

Instead, I will write about how sticky my shirt is right now.  I feel like my name should be Mrs. Puddles.  The dogs are so hot, so tired, the house is so quiet, and shh, it's rather nice, except for the sticky part.

90 degrees and sunny, 94 tomorrow!

Margaret and her little Tennyson...
Some floating daughters...

Miss Camille and I started the day bright and early, with an eye appointment for the little girl who can't see the board in school.  She is indeed getting some spectacles.  She chose clear plastic frames, (she looks adorable in them), we'll get them some time next week.

We stopped at a little grocery store in town, after a stop at the local coffee shack...cold brew for me, iced peach mango tea for her.  In the store for a bag of ice (our ice maker on the refrigerator stopped working, but if you fill it with ice, it'll still dispense it from the door, and when it's this hot out, ice is a treat!), some sliced ham, diet root beer, and a watermelon.

Dinner on the deck:  some burgers, some coneys, some had leftover taco salad, and watermelon.  Margaret and Adrian were here with Wulf and Tennyson, and Evelyn, and Sam, along with the four kids who still live at home, and Paul and I.

This evening,  all of them went to a friend's house for volleyball, and a fire with hot dogs and s'mores.  Paul and I went over to our niece's house, where some other friends gathered too.  What a beautiful evening on the deck.

Okay, this post is like a third grade What I Did Over The Summer essay.  Word vomit.  It's like when one of the kids is telling you a dream, and you try to follow, you really try.

It was nice to spend some time with just Miss Cam this fine morning.  She missed a few days of school this past week, being sick, and is worried about being behind.  I think she'll be fine, I mean, her average is so high that Samuel said he didn't know numbers went that high, when he saw their report cards.

Soldier Sam.   It's so good to see him!  I snapped a pic when he arrived here from drill, he didn't like it:

Okay, I took TWO pics.

He's going to drill again tomorrow, then straight home to Virginia from there.  Oh to have that kind of energy and endurance!

Ah well, the kids are home, and it'll get loud and crazy in here in like one minute...
Edited to add a pic, courtesy of Jonathan...he called it a "blog picture..."
Benjamin and Samuel...our third child, and our eighth child ha....all grown up!

aaaah, now THIS is the LIFE!

The water isn't as warm as I would like, but I cannot complain, because you all would slap me silly!

Miss Sonja K and I....
Miss Char...
Sonja and Charlotte Claire...

So I finally got in there and scooped up the leaves in the middle.  It's snowing from the cottonwood trees, no matter how much I skimmed the top of the pool, it just keeps coming down.  It's clean-the-pool filter basket-every-hour season!

This fine morning, Sonja K. and I took a quick trip into the small city, to Aldi.  We got some drinks, and things for a barbecue this Sunday.  We also took a quick trip into the thrift store...

One of these things we bought, one we didn't.  (Isn't Sonja cute though?)

Yesterday, we went to Burlington, Sonja was looking for a dress for Evelyn to wear to a wedding they are attending on Sunday.  The dressing rooms are closed, so she tried it on over her jeans in the store, we sent the pics to Ev, and she decided it wasn't the dress she wants...too funny.

Samuel got out of drill early, and there's nothing like central NY ice cream!
(Jonathan, Sam, Sonja, Camille)

Today has been a good day.  It's super warm here, warm and humid.  I'm cooled off from the pool right now, but it's looming:  dinner.  I have to cook.  We do not have air conditioning, and it gets mighty hot in the house, but I am not complaining.  No, it's bare feet season, it's summertime, and....ahhhhh.  I'm having my afternoon coffee, and enjoying it.

and the birds are just singing....

It's that intoxicatingly beautiful time of year here in central NY state, when the grass grows lushly right before your eyes, and the flowers are everywhere.  The birds won't shut up, they wake you at dawn and keep at it all day long.  Go for a ride, and see the fields and the rolling hills, the woods all green again, and you'll find yourself saying that yes, this is God's country.

The kids are feeling a bit better, but Wulf is still pretty sick, Margaret and Adrian's little guy.  Please pray for him that he can start keeping things down, it worries me a bit.  I did encourage Margaret that we do live in a country where we have an excellent health care system, and if she needs to bring him in for fluids, they'll take good care of him.  Then Sam said, "What if she calls the doctor, and the doctor says, no more monkeys jumping on the bed!?"

Sam, he's too funny sometimes.  He's here again, when it rains it pours, he has Army Reserves drill this weekend.  He had a PT test this fine morning, and he let me take his pic, for the blog, what a good sport.

Paul and I, and Charlotte Claire are still fine and dandy.  I am hoping that if I get it, I get it fast, and get well, because on Tuesday, I'm flying across this big beautiful country of ours, and yay, seeing Kathryn and Darius and little Achilles, and maybe a newborn baby.  If I'm REALLY lucky, I'll get there just in time for the birth, then have maximum baby time before leaving, as we are only staying one week.

The pool is doing fine, Paul's little fix-it idea worked, it's crystal clear, but still has the pile of leaves in the middle.  What?  I tried to get in there, but it was under 70 degrees, too cold!  Maybe over the next few days as we climb into the nineties, it'll warm up, or it'll be so hot out it'll be refreshing.

Okay, my chocolate chip cookie recipe...I'll give you the original, which is tripled, then the one I've used lately that seems good too.  I don't eat the cookies anymore, but it's my love language, giving people cookies...
One pound butter (4 sticks), soften a bit
1 cup of shortening
(cream together)
3 cups brown sugar
1 and 1/2 cups white sugar
3 teaspoons vanilla
(mix together)
6 eggs, room temp
(beat all together)
Separate bowl:
7 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking soda
3 scant teaspoons salt
Sift together and add to butter mixture
(I usually make one tray without the choc chips, then add 6 cups of them to the rest of the batter)
Bake at 350, for 6 minutes, then switch trays from upper to lower, two trays at a time, then 3 more minutes...I take them out just as they are browning...love baking on parchment paper, just pull the paper off the pans...

I've tried this recipe too:
3/4 cup of butter
1/4 cup shortening
1 1/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs

3 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
scant teaspoon salt
2 cups chocolate chips

The latter recipe tends to be a bit puffier, not as flat as the first recipe...but the first one produces a very chewy, classic cookie.

Wow, now I want to make cookies!  Jonathan was craving ice cream yesterday, after not eating anything much all day, so Charlotte Claire and I went to Byrne Dairy and got a few half gallons.  We also got four half moon cookies, as they were a dollar each, Wednesday special, in case they wanted a little something to eat, tempt their appetites.  Cam managed a half of one, and enjoyed it.

Sam arrived last evening, it's always so good to see him.  He's bringing Grace and Grant up in a few weeks to stay for the week, it'll be nice.

So the kids here are feeling better, not 100% but definitely getting better.  There's nothing like an illness to show us how fragile we really are...

Wednesday, June 2, 2021

um, this is not what we wanted!

No sir, we only wanted the sunshine and puppy dogs, please.  None of that stomach bug garbage.  But alas, it has hit the house.  3 of the 4 kids here have thrown up last night.  ugh.  UGH.  (ugh is not a strong enough expression, now is it?!).    I hope it moves through fast, and if I get it, I get it and get over it quickly, as I am due to leave for Salem, Oregon, in six days...Miss Kathryn Grace is having a baby.

If we were the ones choosing, no way would we ever choose the trials, but it's rather restful to know that we can just buckle up and enjoy the ride.   The ride gets bumpy, and we don't always like it, but there are little treasures to find, and tried faith IS more precious than gold.

I haven't gotten it yet...
Sunshine and roses and marigolds, with ivy.

Last night, I made homemade butter chicken, and it might be the last time my kids will ever want it...it WAS good though.

I am going to stock up on ginger ale and crackers, I think....
